About Kopi
Kopi was originally named Coffee Pot, but this name somehow did not work for her so she has been rename Kopi, (Indonesian for coffee). She is starting to come now when we call out to her..) What a playful delight!
Kopi has a medical condition called Immune-mediated thrombocytopenia –(IMT). Details on this are attached below. Apart from her IMT, Kopi is a healthy, happy girl and very easy to care for. Her carer ensures that there are always 2 large bowls of water available for her, which are filled daily. She keeps an eye out for increased breathing, tiredness, weakness or swelling. Kopi’s skin is checked daily (while patting), and her carer feels for lumps or crusty spots which could be an indication of a small infection. If any are found, betadine is applied regularly. None of these have required vet intervention to heal. If play time gets too rough with the other dogs, the carer stops them to avoid any accidents with Kopi.
On the whole, Kopi is improving every day and is now treated like any other dog, with the exception of daily checks. Since her condition has been identified, no major vet intervention has been required.

Immune-mediated thrombocytopenia –(IMT)
IMT is an immune-mediated disease in which the body sees its own platelets as “foreign”.
Therefore the body attacks and destroys the platelets. Subsequently the dog’s platelet count drops. Platelets are required to help the blood clot properly. When the platelet count drops symptoms will start to occur including: bruising on the skin, bloody nose and gums, gastro-intestinal bleeding which results in black, tarry faeces and also swelling of the glands. Increased rapid breathing, weakness and lack of energy are also symptoms that occur.
Trigger
Kopi underwent surgery for sterilisation and the anaesthetic triggered Kopi’s symptoms.
Treatment
Kopi is on Macrolone which helps to suppress the immune symptom. Side effects are increased drinking and urination. A LARGE BOWL OF WATER NEEDS TO BE AVAILABLE AT ALL TIMES. Increased hunger (you do not need to feed more food) and also sometimes increased panting. Kopi is also on Ranitidine to protect her stomach lining against ulcers and bleeding.
VET INVOLVEMENT is extremely important and her medication must NOT be stopped, decreased or increased without approval from the vet. Kopi’s medication will slowly be decreased, checking her blood results prior to each decrease. Kopi will probably be on medication for another few months. Once she is off medication, her blood needs to be checked regularly to ensure that all is still on track. Advising a new vet that she has IMT is important for her long term health, as certain medications could trigger a relapse.
Complications
Kopi is more susceptible to infection ie. Urinary, skin. She has developed a few small skin infections which have been easily treated at home. Kopi is also at risk of a relapse, but with careful monitoring from the vet (medications) and her owner (for symptoms), it is usually picked up early and her medication can be adjusted by the vet. Early intervention is preferable than leaving any symptoms unchecked.
