About Wilma
Wilma is a small girl with tiny ears, and was rescued from death row at the pound.
Ok, so after a few weeks at the shelter we have been spending a lot of time with Miss Wilma, so that an accurate description can be provided on her profile. In short... Wilma is gorgeous! She races over for pats, is playful, affectionate, and sweet. But this was not always the case, so let's start at the beginning.
When Wilma was first picked up from the pound she was in quite a traumatised state. If you went anywhere near her back she would squeek with fright. Front on, she would lunge at you with her ears back, and bite. She meant business, and despite her tiny size, believe me she was intimidating! As is often the case with these small bunnies, chances are she was initially purchased as a child's pet. Given her small size, her previous owners probably thought that the double story hutch the pet shop reccomended was adequate. Despite her her small size, they didn't realise her activity levels were restricted, her intelligence stifled as she suffered in her small prison. Kids would grab her, she'd be carried around (possibly dropped) like a toy. Eventually she came to realise she could defend herself. When the family could not go near their aggressive rabbit, they may have dumped her, and that could be how she ended up on death row at the pound. Yes, this is speculation, but it's a story we've all become very familiar with at the shelter, due to the number of times it happens.
Wilma was given a large enclosure when she arrived here, enough space for her to get away, or do zoomies and play. Little Miss Grumpy-Pants would launch her attack as soon as the door was opened, but only treats and food was being delivered during these times. Eventually she came to realise nobody was going to hurt her, and it was a special day when during a big mouthful our hand reached out to pat her. You could see her hesitate, turning to run away, but she was ready for the next step and stood her ground. After a short pat we retreated. Next morning, she was there waiting for more interaction, and the rest is history! Now she is desperate to be around humans and part of the family. She no longer grunts, lunges, or has any kind of undesirable behaviour. Her rapid change in temperament is all due to her intelligence, this is one smart bunny, and deep down all she wanted was respect and love.
We're looking for the lucky person who can have Wilma in their lives, and enjoy her company like we do.Given her past, she is probably best not being rehomed with young children. She'd love to live in an apartment with someone, or a garden, or anywhere really where she feels protected, safe, stable and loved.
Medical notes
Vaccinated -please note that due to the release of calici virus, all bunnies adopted from us will be vaccinated.
Desexing normally costs anywhere from $100-$360. Vaccinations are from $40-80 (costs differ between vet clinics). Therefore please don't try to haggle the price of the animal for adoption. If you can't afford the adoption fee, you certainly wont afford the ongoing costs associated with animals.
