About Scooby
Scooby is a fun loving boy with a joyous nature that was born with severely bowed legs causing his entire body to be 'out of sync' but, despite all of this, Scooby enjoys his life at the moment. Scooby is in foster care with a little Pug called Bubbles and they enjoy playing together and going for short walks. His carer Lisa describes him as an absolute gem and everyone who meets him falls instantly in love with this dear little man. Scooby’s previous owner bought him from Pets Paradise at Mt Druitt for $699 when he was approximately 8 weeks old and he was sold as a Shih Tzu X. We have the receipt from Pets Paradise that contains Scooby’s microchip number and it is fairly obvious to vets and all who meet Scooby that he is definitely not a Shih Tzu X! Scooby is still quite young and is already starting to suffer because of his condition as he can’t walk long distances and is suffering with some pain. Left untreated his condition will deteriorate leaving euthanasia as the only option. PAWS decided to have Scooby’s legs x-rayed to obtain the correct diagnosis of his condition and, once we knew exactly what we were dealing with, set about finding a surgeon capable of doing the surgery required to straighten his legs. We located an orthopaedic surgeon who will operate on Scooby doing one leg at a time and four months apart. Scooby’s surgery is expected to cost approximately $4000 but PAWS believe Scooby is well worth the effort and hope that you will support our quest to raise the money for his surgery.
UPDATE 14 JULY: Scooby has had surgery on his right front leg and is doing extremely well. Scooby’s leg has been plated and pinned with wedges of bone taken out in order for it to grow in the right direction and the amazing thing is that new bone will grow with the technique undertaken. Scooby’s only restriction at the moment is no jumping on or off furniture because any hard landing will ruin the surgery done to straighten his leg. Scooby was back playing with his mate Bubbles within 48 hours and now has an almost straight right leg with his paw facing the right direction. The vet is 100% happy with his work and is looking forward to doing the next surgery in approximately 6 weeks to correct Scooby’s other leg. Once that is done and Scooby has recovered he will be able to go to a new home.
UPDATE 31 AUGUST: Scooby had his second surgery on Monday 26 August and, while under anaesthetic the leg previously operated on was x-rayed. The vet was extremely pleased and was happy to report that the first surgery site is healing well. After Scooby’s second surgery we had a consultation with the vet who reported that everything went smoothly with the surgery and he is confident that Scooby will now have two fairly straight legs and his feet will point to the front and not the side as they did previously. Scooby was in a lot of pain on the first day but we have him on strong medication to alleviate his discomfort as much as possible. The bandages have come off and he will have the stitches removed in another week when he should start to feel more like himself. Scooby has a plate in each of his front legs with seven screws holding everything together and his recovery time is approximately eight weeks. We think he looks terrific now and in a few weeks he will be up and running!
Medical notes
The report from the vet performing Scooby’s surgery is as follows: Scooby had premature closure of both his ulnar growth plates when he was a growing pup which has resulted in radio-ulnar bowing, valgus deformity and carpal rotation. Essentially the surgeon has to use published normal joint angles ie: the relationship between elbow and carpus, do a distal ulna osteotomy then a corrective cuneiform radial wedge closing osteotomy, then repair the osteotomy with a plate and screws to bring the foot into as close to normal alignment as he can manage. The simple name for this surgery is radio-ulnar corrective osteotomy.
