About Harriet
PLEASE READ MEDICAL NOTES BEFORE PHONING OR EMAILING!!
Harriet is one joyous little Pug .... affectionate, playful and fun with nothing but love to give. You would never know that this beautiful little girl has come from not so beautiful beginnings, pumping out puppies for profit! Harriet came to PAWS when two lovely ladies saw her advertised and donated the money to buy Harriet who had been used as a breeding machine. After a visit to the vet it was discovered Harriet has severe breathing difficulties, is overweight and has a pretty bad back!!! Despite all her health issues, Harriet has a sweet disposition and has settled into her foster home in no time. Harriet is already house trained and loves playing with toys but mostly she loves a good snuggle with her foster mum. Harriet also wants to play and have fun with her doggy friends, even if she can't quite keep up just yet! Harriet will need specialist surgery to widen her nasal passages to allow her to breathe easier. She also has an 'elongated soft palate' which is the soft structure at the back of the mouth behind the hard palate. In brachycephalic dogs, the soft palate is longer than normal and hangs down into the back of the throat. This, in turn, interferes with airflow into the main windpipe (the trachea) resulting in laboured breathing. Part of the specialist surgery will include fixing Harriet's soft palate and the two procedures together will allow her to function like a normal little dog so she can breathe more easily, walk, run and enjoy her life. Harriet's specialist surgery needs to be done as soon as possible and is an expensive surgery which is expected to cost in the vicinity of $2500. PLEASE NOTE HARRIET WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION UNTIL SHE HAS RECOVERED FROM HER SURGERY !!
Medical notes
UPDATE 18 MARCH: Harriet has now had her surgery to enable her to breathe properly. Her underlying problem is termed 'brachycephalic syndrome' and she had a severe case. Harriet's problem was genetic so she’s been suffering from this her whole life! Harriet needed three procedures performed during surgery -
her soft palate was shortened as it was too long so getting caught and blocking her airways - she had everted laryngeal saccules removed. Because of her abnormal breathing (narrow nostrils and long soft palate), every time she took a breath it caused huge negative pressure in her larynx. This sucked the sides of larynx into the airway (like little balloons - called saccules); they were on both sides and were essentially blocking her airway every time she took a breath
her nostrils were widened and this increased the diameter of her nostrils, thus increasing the airflow.
After the surgery Harriet was breathing better and is now recovering in foster care.
UPDATE 27 MARCH: It has now been two weeks since Harriet's surgery and she is doing very well. The totally recovery time for Harriet is 8 weeks so she will not be available for adoption until after the 24th of April. Please feel free to contact us but we would appreciate your patience as we answer enquiries during the coming weeks. Also please note that although the surgery will dramatically improve Harriet's well being she will still need to be in a very caring and patient home and preferably with someone who has had previous experience with brachycephalic breeds.
