About Tex
Stunning Tex is looking for a new forever home as his beloved mum is moving overseas for work; do you have room in your home and your heart for this gorgeous young dog???
Adopted as a young puppy from a rural rescue group Tex was originally thought to be a Mastiff/Ridgeback mix though upon being DNA tested by his adopter it turns out he is a mix between a Coon Hound, a Boxer and a Border Collie so he didn’t grow as large as originally guesstimated though he’s still a big beautiful boy!
Tex is described as a truly lovely dog who’s a bit of a “mummas boy” and just loves being around humans of all shapes and sizes. He is a very smart dog who learns quickly though he doesn’t enjoy training unless there are treats involved and then he responds well and knows his boundaries. Tex knows the basics such as “sit” and “down”. He can get overly excited when there are new people around or when he first sees you when you get home from work and he’ll jump up for cuddles and attention so this is when the “down” command comes in handy. Because of this we wouldn’t recommend him to a home with toddlers who he could quite easily bowl over in his enthusiasm. \ He loves to play chaseys or tug-o-war with his humans but he needs some practice at fetch as he loves a game with his doggie pals though he prefers to chase the dog with the ball rather than fetching it himself! Tex regularly goes camping and he loves having open space to run in; and boy can he run! He is very very fast!!!!
Tex has been living with a male Border Collie and they are terrific together; eating, sleeping and playing with no problems at all. He also has other doggie friends who come camping with him or he just hangs out with them when their human friends catch up. He can be a bit unsure when meeting new dogs and can be protective of his owner when they come across strange dogs on their daily jog, so he’ll need reassurance and careful introductions to help with this.
As Tex is used to spending time inside, especially at night (he’s slept inside since he was a wee puppy), we would like to see this inside / outside lifestyle continue in his new home with either another friendly dog for company or on his own, if he won’t be left alone for long periods of time especially during his settling in period. Daily walks/runs, secure fencing, bones to chew on and toys for stimulation will make Tex very happy indeed!
Medical notes
Tex has been desexed, vaccinated and micro chipped. he is up to date with flea and worm control.
Adoption details
Once the animal is advertised candidates for adoption are requested to fill in a form.
The adoption questionnaire form asks where the animal will sleep, details of people and other animals in the home, training and exercise plans etc. We use this form as part of our screening process.
If we like what we read and the animal’s individual needs are met we then conduct an informal phone interview.
Then the potential adopter meets the animal at the carers home or the carer may choose to take the animal to the adopter’s home to do a house and yard inspection.
If the adopter meets the animal at the carer’s home a house/yard inspection is done after the meet.
When the yard inspection is done we are able to further evaluate the suitability of the candidate to adopt.
If we are satisfied that the animals needs will be met by the adopter and that they are a good match for one another then a trial period may begin.
We have legally binding pre-adoption forms which allow us to remove the animal from the home if all other solutions to issues have failed.
We have a good support base which adopters can utilise if needed, such as a professional trainer, a behaviourist, vets and a groomer.
Homeless Hounds offers support to our adopters for the life of the animal. It is policy that each adopter is aware that if the ever need help or to rehome the animal then HH wants to facilitate that.
Our procedures are based on advice from "model" and well established rescue groups and trial and error.
