About Laika (adopted 16/12/2012)
Laika is a 2 year old, medium to large, female, Great Dane x kelpie. This loyal, loving, gentle and intelligent girl seeks a forever family who give her attention, time and love. In return she will be the most devoted dog you could ask for!
Laika is house-trained and enjoys spending time inside being included as part of the family. She is incredibly intelligent and highly trainable. She already knows how to sit, stop, stay, fetch and hop on her bed.
Laika's high intelligence would suit an owner that could continue her positive reinforcement training to keep her stimulated. She loves laying at your feet whilst you work but also needs lots of exercise to keep her happy so a good-sized back yard (with someone to throw her a ball) and 1 or 2 walks a day would be important.
Laika plays very happily with other dogs and is great off-leash and would come straight back when called. We haven’t seen her with cats, however when walking at the lake she totally ignores the seagulls and other birdlife, so it seems other animals don't bother her too much!
Laika would suit a family with no children or only older children who would allow her inside, spend time with her and make her part of the family. She really wants to be part of the gang (a dog-friend would be great for her too!). She is desperate to please the people who love her - and she shows you how much she loves you with her beautiful behaviour, her cuddles and kisses.
Laika is in foster care in Toronto, NSW Lake Macquarie, south of Newcastle). If you would like to meet Laika and can offer her the forever home that she really deserves, please phone foster carer Eva 0417 690 801 or 0418 613 385 or 02-4959-7648.
Dog Rescue Newcastle www.dogrescuenewcastle.com.au is a not-for-profit, volunteer organisation. Our $380 adoption fee covers the dog's desexing, vaccinations, flea and worm treatments, microchipping, and lifetime registration. Your support allows us to continue saving homeless dogs.

Adoption details
(1) The first step is to phone (preferred) or email the foster carer listed on the pet's profile. They can tell you all about the pet. They will also ask you about what sort of home you are offering in order to assess if it is a good match.
(2) Arrange to meet the pet, usually at the foster carers home or nearby.
(3) If that goes well we will arrange a property check so we can verify that your home and yard are suitable for the pet you've selected. They will ask to see photo ID.
(4) If both sides agree, then you can pay for and adopt your new family member! The two week trial begins on the day of adoption.
