About Cola
Cola and three other guinea pigs were apparently dumped on someone, who then took them to the pound. The pound were kind enough to contact us so we could rescue them, as they otherwise would not have survived for much longer. All boys are extremely thin and mite infested. They've had a dose of revolution, and are on a course of baycox to rule out coccidiosis being the cause of their malnutrition. However it is most likely a simple case of them being starved, or given a completely inappropriate diet. These boys will need some time to recover and rule out any underlying health concerns, but adoption interest is welcome during this recovery period. A quick update on cola, since he arrived 5 weeks ago. Cola was lucky enough to have only lost one lower tooth when he arrived (unlike the other boys which had none) so he managed to eat quite well. He has put on over 22% of his body weight since arriving, but still has a fair way to go before his hip and back bone stop protruding. He suffered the most from the mites, and after several medicated baths has healthy skin and the start of a glossy coat. As an older boy in poor health, he suffers from impaction, and needs help with defecating twice a day, however we have hope this will improve as he gains more muscle tone. Before arriving, he'd most likely been kept on wire flooring, and his nails had curled under his pads causeing swelling and deformities on his front paws. A nail trim and care has seen the inflammation die down, and he now walks without pain. On his right hind leg he had a massive, old abscess, which needed to be lanced, and the puss drained out and cleaned. He finished his course of antibiotics and no longer suffers from this. Cola is a gorgeous boy, who will need to be with us for longer before he is able to find a home of his own. He has a gorgeous, laid back personality, and the friendliest eyes that understands we're helping him. He has the cutest way of sleeping, all curled up, totally relaxed and comfortable on soft hay and blankets. It's so nice to see him this comfortable, after all the pain he has endured. His buddy at the shelter is pepsi, and these two boys will need to stay together.
