About Carissa
I am trying a new home to see if i like it. When carissa came into the pound she was in agony and dying. Carissa had obviously had puppies very recently as she was still lactating and her very nasty symptoms told us she had a condition known as pyometra. This is an infection in the uterus and is life threatening if surgery is not performed immediately. The pound were advised to euthanase carissa to end her suffering but as her rescuer had seen her in the pound the previous day just laying in her basket not wanting to move we agreed to take this tiny little dog on to give her a chance at life. Carissa was rushed to the vet by a kind kennel hand and she was put on an antibiotic and pain relief drip immediately. The vet set about removing her uterus but, unfortunately for carissa, it had already ruptured inside her tiny body and peritonitis has set in so she was put on a drip and given massive doses of antibiotics, pain relief and fluids to try and help her win the fight. The vets were not at all confident that carissa would live so we all prayed hard and our prayers were answered. Carissa turned the corner after 36 hours and we were given the good news that she would survive. Carissa stayed at the vet hospital for five days and was kept on an antibiotic, fluid, pain relief drip during that time. She finally went to her foster home and has been recuperating in comfort, warmth and with lots of love. Once carissa's flea ridden, matted coat was clipped off we found a teeny, tiny girl under there who is just adorable. She is a little timid but loves cuddles and most of all. Sleeping on her foster carer's bed under the blankets! carissa's new home will be a very special one and we will keep you updated as to when she is ready to be adopted. Update 15 april: carissa has really come to life of late. . . . She is very happy running around and has a spring in her step and contentment written all over her face. An amazing change for a little dog who was so sick and neglected when she came from the pound. Carissa is eating well and progressing with her house training, she has gained weight and is looking fit and healthy now. Carissa loves to rest on the couch watching tv with her foster carers or on the trampoline bed sunning herself with the other doggies in her foster home. They have accepted her into their pack with all of them getting along well together. Carissa sleeps soundly in her little bed next to her foster carer or scratches on the side of the bed in the middle of the night to be lifted up so that she can snuggle down with them until the morning. Carissa has met the neighbours dog, a golden retriever, and was not intimidated at all by the dog's size. Carissa is still a little timid so must have a quiet and calm home with no small children. She would suit a retired couple who are home a lot and can take her places with them and another small dog for company would also be nice. Carissa's coat was filthy and matted when she came to us, it is growing back nicely and will require regular grooming and clipping to keep her looking and feeling great. Carissa is a house dog and must always have access to the house
