The maremma was developed as a livestock guardian dog and has assisted in the protection of endangered species by acting as a deterrent that allows endangered wolves and livestock to coexist without significant stock losses and in warrnambool they used a maremma to guard a flock of endangered penguins which was quite successful. They had to be tough resourceful and happy with their own company loyal to their flock and a staunch protector from attack by predators. They are very intelligent but they have been bred to be self-reliant so don't necessarily look to humans for leadership. They are reserved with strangers and do quite well as a companion for those who understand what they are and what they do.
