Species: Alexandrine Parrot
Age: 14 years
Gender: Female
Location: Smithfield Plains SA
We are looking for a very special, experienced home for Winona, a 14-year-old female Alexandrine who deserves the chance to finally experience a safe, loving and stress-free environment.
Winona has unfortunately endured a very difficult past, and her experiences have understandably had a significant impact on her behaviour, trust and overall wellbeing.
Her Background
Winona spent 13 years living in a home with dogs and children who would frequently poke and prod at her cage. This constant stress and lack of appropriate handling have resulted in her plucking most of her feathers.
She is also very defensive and territorial, which is understandable given what she has been through.
Unfortunately, her previous living environment was also heavily affected by cigarette smoke. When Winona was surrendered, her cage was covered in nicotine residue, which took approximately two hours to scrape and clean.
Perhaps one of the saddest things is that Winona is terrified of water unless it is provided in a bowl. Her previous owners reportedly used soaking her with water as a form of punishment.
Winona has been through a lot, and she needs someone who understands that her behaviours are likely a result of her past experiences rather than simply her personality.
Medical History
There is no known medical history or previous veterinary treatment. However, given her history of neglect, stress and feather plucking, a comprehensive avian veterinary examination is strongly recommended.
There may be underlying health concerns that have not yet been identified.
What Winona Needs
Winona is not a beginner bird and will require an exceptionally experienced parrot owner, preferably someone with a background in rehabilitating neglected or traumatised birds.
She needs someone who:
* Understands defensive and territorial behaviours.
* Has experience working with feather-plucking parrots.
* Will never force interaction or handling.
* Understands that rebuilding trust can take months or even years.
* Can provide a quiet, predictable and low-stress environment.
* Is prepared to provide ongoing veterinary care.
Her environment must also meet appropriate parrot welfare standards:
* Absolutely no rust in her cage or environment.
* No candles, air fresheners or chemical fragrances.
* No rope, mirror or bell toys.
* A balanced diet consisting of appropriate pellets, soaked seed, fresh fruit and vegetables.
Other Household Requirements
* No other birds.
* No children.
* No dogs or other animals.
* An experienced, adult-only household.
Reason for Rehoming
Unfortunately, her current ownerβs personal circumstances have become increasingly difficult due to financial and mental health struggles. This decision has not been made lightly, but finding Winona a home that can properly meet her needs is the priority.
A Final Word About Winona β€οΈ
Winona doesnβt need someone looking for a perfectly tame, cuddly parrot. She needs someone who understands that she has been let down by people for much of her life.
She deserves to know that hands arenβt something to fear, that water isnβt something to be frightened of, and that her home is somewhere she will never be hurt again.
We are looking for someone who sees past her missing feathers and defensive behaviour and recognises a bird who deserves a second chance.
Please only enquire if you have the experience, patience, financial ability and long-term commitment to give Winona the life she deserves.
