About Duggee
🐶🐾 Meet Duggee – A Little Boy Who Deserves a Second Chance
Meet Duggee, a beautiful 9-year-old Cavoodle who has already endured more than any dog should have to experience.
Duggee has had two homes throughout his life. Sadly, he reportedly experienced abuse in his first home before finding himself with a second family, where he spent the next three years.
On Friday, 23 October, Duggee was brought into an emergency veterinary clinic by his second family to be euthanized due to reported behavioural concerns, including an incident involving a young child.
Following a veterinary assessment, euthanasia was not considered the most appropriate course of action. His owners agreed to surrender him, and a veterinary nurse working at the clinic stepped in to give him another chance.
Duggee is now in temporary foster care, where he is receiving the medical attention, patience and love he deserves. ❤️
🩺 Duggee's Medical Journey
Unfortunately, Duggee has several medical conditions requiring ongoing veterinary care.
Duggee has a significant grade 4–5/6 heart murmur, which was first identified in 2024. Despite this finding, no cardiac treatment had been commenced by his previous owners prior to his surrender.
Recent chest X-rays have confirmed that Duggee's heart is enlarged, and he has now commenced Cardisure (pimobendan), a medication that helps his heart pump more efficiently and reduces its workload.
His heart condition is currently being managed medically, with ongoing veterinary monitoring. An echocardiogram is not currently planned.
Although his heart condition is concerning, Duggee is currently showing no obvious clinical signs of congestive heart failure, which is encouraging.
Duggee also suffers from arthritis and back pain, which can cause discomfort and may have contributed to his previously reported behavioural concerns.
In addition to his cardiac and musculoskeletal conditions, Duggee requires dental treatment and potentially desexing. These procedures will need careful planning and veterinary assessment due to his heart condition.
🐶 Understanding Duggee's Behaviour
One of the most heartbreaking parts of Duggee's story is the circumstances surrounding his surrender.
His previous owners reported that Duggee had snapped at a young child, raising concerns about his behaviour.
However, a close family relative subsequently contacted his foster carer and provided further information about the incident, reporting that the child had pulled Duggee's tail forcefully before he reacted.
Although this account has not been independently verified, it provides important context.
Duggee suffers from arthritis and back pain, and it is possible that he reacted defensively to a painful or frightening experience rather than displaying unprovoked aggression.
Importantly, since entering foster care, Duggee has shown no signs of aggression towards children, other dogs or his foster carer.
There have been several occasions where Duggee has demonstrated signs of pain or discomfort when being picked up by his foster carer. Despite this, he has never attempted to snap, bite or display aggression towards her.
This has been particularly encouraging given the behavioural concerns reported by his previous owners.
Duggee has interacted with children and other dogs while in foster care without any observed aggressive behaviour.
He has instead been showing his affectionate side, enjoying cuddles, comfortable beds and the company of his foster family.
While his reported bite history should still be taken seriously, his behaviour in foster care has been positive.
Duggee deserves to be understood as an individual, rather than defined by one reported incident.
❤️ A Future Worth Fighting For
At nine years old, Duggee should be enjoying his senior years surrounded by love, comfort and security.
Instead, he has found himself starting over once again.
After reportedly experiencing mistreatment in his first home, spending three years with his second family and ultimately being surrendered following a request for euthanasia, Duggee deserves the opportunity to experience stability and compassionate care.
His foster carer is working hard to address his medical needs and give him the best possible chance at a comfortable, happy future.
Duggee may have a complicated medical history and a difficult past, but he is so much more than his conditions or one reported incident.
He deserves to be understood, not simply labelled.
And most importantly, he deserves a second chance. ❤️🐾
