About Skylah
Skylah has had a hard road from the scrawny little pup she was when she first got to her current fosterers, but after a long diagnosis, it was found Skylah had tethered cord syndrome. It has been a long and tough treatment journey but Skylah is now recovering beautifully and transitioning towards being a normal pup, free of severe pain for the first time in her life.
Simply put, Skylah is a fighter. Despite how limited she has been physically due to her condition, her endless love and enthusiasm for new people, new friends, new toys and new places has never dimmed.
She is an extremely smart dog and has learnt many tricks including; sit, stay, drop, leave it, middle, roll over, bow, paw/shake, look, touch (hand-targeting), cuddle, find a toy, go to bed and heal. She has also been taught to communicate her needs using buttons (requesting time outside, toys, treats and cuddles via 4 separate buttons).
She is toilet trained and will let you know when she needs to go relieve herself and understands to use a pee pad if that is the only option. She is extremely food motivated and has learnt scent work games to keep her mind busy. She mostly walks with a slack leash, sits readily at intersections and is easily corrected if she gets too distracted or excited on walks.
She still has some coping mechanisms she picked up while she was experiencing pain prior to surgery, so someone experienced with working breeds would be best to help her curb these. Someone who can provide structure, routine and sufficient mental enrichment will find Skylah’s behaviour fairly standard for a border collie that is on limited exercise. She loves cuddles, sunbathing and people watching. Skylah is also looking for a home where she can be the only animal due to requiring special needs.
Her perfect foster/adopter will have the patience and understanding to care for her through ongoing recovery and be capable of providing effective mental and physical stimulation that she needs. A backyard is highly preferable, and her current needs require someone who works from home.
From the current fosters:
We have been with her from the beginning (18 months) and despite how much we love her, personal commitments mean that she can’t stay with us for much longer. However, we would still love to be involved in her care and are keen to be a resource for whoever takes her on next, whether it is her forever home or another foster home. Skylah changed our lives and brought a beautiful goofy chaos into our home, we are so excited to get her to her happy ending!
