About Esco
Esco has spent his whole life being someone's much-loved family dog, and it's very clear how difficult it was for his previous family to say goodbye.
They've had him since he was a puppy and described him as having "the kindest heart ever," a dog who loves people, craves affection and gets wonderfully excited whenever there's someone new to meet.
At five years old, Esco has a lovely balance of energy and downtime. He enjoys a good walk, is generally easy to handle and harness, and has been relaxed when meeting new people here at the shelter. He can be strong and enthusiastic when excited, but once that initial excitement settles, there's a very affectionate boy underneath who simply loves being included. He has also shown some nice social behaviour around other dogs and may be suitable to live with a well matched dog following a successful meet and greet.
There is one important thing Esco's new family needs to know. He has a history of escaping when frightened by strong winds, storms or fireworks, including climbing over a fence during particularly windy weather. His new home will need a secure yard, but more importantly, Esco must be able to come inside the house, especially during bad weather or anything that may frighten him. Giving him a safe indoor space where he can settle close to his family will be an important part of helping him feel secure.
Esco's new family can also work on independence training, gradually teaching him that being left alone for reasonable periods is safe and normal. Simple enrichment at home, such as food toys, sniffing activities and things to keep his brain occupied, will help too. Positive, reward-based training will be the best way to guide this affectionate boy while keeping that trust strong.
Esco is suited to a home with dog-savvy secondary school aged children or older, as he can become jumpy or a little overenthusiastic when highly excited. He also has mild Grade 1 dental disease, which doesn't require surgery at this stage and can simply be supported with regular dental home care.
His previous family wanted one thing above all else: for Esco to be looked after and loved. Now he's ready for a family who can give this sweet, people-loving boy the secure home he deserves.
No appointment is needed, so come and visit Esco at our North Melbourne shelter. If you're interested in adopting him, our team can arrange a meet and greet. If you have children or another dog at home, please bring them along so they can meet Esco too.
