About Dustin
Dustin has had a pretty big journey since arriving at the shelter, but through everything he keeps showing us what a sweet, clever young dog he is underneath all those nerves.
This two-year-old Kelpie came to us as a stray and has had quite a lot thrown at him in a short space of time. Despite that, he's continued making progress and is learning that new people, places and experiences don't have to feel so overwhelming.
Dustin is a sensitive boy who likes to take things in before jumping straight in. Once he feels more comfortable, he'll approach, accept treats and engage with the people around him. He's already made some lovely progress with his behaviour team, including calmer walks, some great mat work and becoming much more comfortable exploring spaces that initially felt too difficult for him.
His new family will need to keep building that confidence with slow, positive introductions to unfamiliar people and environments. Handling and harnessing should also be approached gently, pairing each step with treats and praise so Dustin can learn that these everyday things are safe and rewarding. A predictable routine, force-free training and people who are happy to celebrate the small wins will suit him beautifully.
Dustin may be suitable to live with another well matched dog following a successful meet and greet. He is suited to a home with dog-savvy secondary school aged children or older, as he can be quite bouncy when excited.
He has also had a few medical and behavioural considerations during his time with us, including some skin treatment and support for anxiety. He's made good progress, and if you're interested in adopting him, our teams will talk you through about any ongoing care or medication.
Dustin doesn't need someone expecting him to be perfect on day one. He needs someone willing to show him that the world can be predictable, safe and fun. With that support, there's a really lovely young dog here who is already showing just how much he can grow.
No appointment is needed, so come and visit Dustin at our North Melbourne shelter. If you're interested in adopting him, our team can arrange a meet and greet. If you have children or another dog at home, please bring them along so they can meet Dustin too.
