About Reuben
Reuben is proof that a scared first impression can hide a completely different little cat underneath.
When he first arrived at the shelter, he was frozen with uncertainty and far more comfortable watching people from a distance than interacting with them. Even treats and toys had to be introduced slowly, but over time he started coming forward for food and showing little sparks of curiosity.
Foster care is where Reuben really began to change. His carer gave him a quiet safe room and built a gentle routine around creamy treats, soft talking and simply spending time nearby without expecting anything from him. A few days in, Reuben had his first big breakthrough. He melted into pats, purred loudly, pressed his forehead against his foster carer's face and even rested his paws gently on their cheeks. Soon after, he was playing with toys alongside them and choosing to come out of hiding simply to be nearby.
Since then, his confidence has continued to grow. Reuben now leans into pats, has even chosen to sleep on his foster carer's chest, and is showing more of the affectionate, playful young cat underneath all those nerves. Sudden movements and unfamiliar sounds can still startle him, and he may run back to his safe place when something feels too much, but once everything settles, so does he.
At only ten months old, Reuben still has so much time to keep learning and becoming braver. He'll need a quiet home, a safe room to begin with, and someone patient enough to let the relationship grow at his pace. His foster experience has already shown just how rewarding that patience can be.
Reuben is part of our Rescue or Rehome program, where we are committed to finding homes for cats and kittens who simply cannot cope in the shelter environment. If you can open your heart and home to Reuben - or if you're a rescue group able to help - please reach out to us at adoptions@dogshome.com
