About Fleur
Fleur is not the cat who will sell herself to you in five minutes.
She won't be waiting at the front of her enclosure demanding attention from every visitor who walks past. More often than not, you'll find Fleur curled up in her safe space, quietly watching the world around her and deciding whether it feels safe enough to trust.
For many people, that can make it easy to overlook her.
That would be a mistake.
When Fleur first arrived in our care, she found the shelter environment overwhelming. The constant noise, movement and unfamiliar faces left her unsure of herself, and like many shy cats, her response was to retreat rather than reach out. What we have learned over time, however, is that Fleur doesn't want to be alone. She simply needs a little help finding her confidence.
During a recent assessment, Fleur was resting comfortably in her bed when she greeted us with a big stretch. Although she wasn't ready to rush forward, she immediately showed interest in a treat wand and happily accepted some tasty paste. Over the next few minutes, something wonderful happened. Fleur stood up, lifted her tail and slowly approached for more. Before long she was kneading her paws, leaning into pats, lifting her bottom for scratches and offering gentle head bumps.
For a brief moment, the frightened shelter cat disappeared, and the affectionate little girl underneath shone through.
The reality is that cats like Fleur are often the ones who get left behind. Shelters are noisy, unpredictable places that don't always allow shy cats to show their true personalities. While confident cats can charm visitors instantly, sensitive cats like Fleur spend their energy simply trying to cope.
The heartbreaking truth is that some of the sweetest cats we meet are the ones people walk past.
Fleur has already shown us who she is becoming. We see it in her head bumps, her happy kneading paws, her willingness to approach for treats and the way she relaxes when given patience and kindness. What she needs now is someone willing to see beyond her fear and recognise the loving cat underneath.
We truly believe Fleur has that future waiting for her.
She doesn't need someone looking for the perfect cat. She needs someone willing to give an overlooked cat a chance. Because sometimes the cats hiding quietly at the back are the ones who have the most love to give.
If you can offer patience, understanding and a little faith, Fleur might just reward you with a lifetime of trust.
Fleur is part of our Rescue or Rehome program, where we are committed to finding homes for cats and kittens who simply cannot cope in the shelter environment. If you can open your heart and home to Fleur - or if you're a rescue group able to help - please reach out to us at adoptions@dogshome.com
