About Tank
Before applying, please remember that adopting a puppy into your home is a huge commitment, and very demanding of your time. Puppies require daily exercise, positive and varied socialisation, grooming, training and playtime. When applying, please consider your work hours, holidays, and how busy your personal life is. Puppies will need someone who is home for most of the day with regular focused input, especially in those first six months after adoption
NAME: Tank
BEFORE SAFE ESPERANCE: Came to SAFE Esperance as an owner surrender.
BREED: Shar Pei x
Breed Traits: Shar Peis were originally bred to guard, hunt, herd and fight but is now a companion dog. A calm, independent thinker, sometimes aloof he is a good watch dog and guard dog and devoted to his family. Early training is essential to counter his stubborn strong will and socialisation with humans and dogs must begin early. Due to his short nose he is prone to overheating so needs to be an inside dog.
********************************************************************
ASSETS: Shy at first, but once he’s comfortable, he’s affectionate, friendly, sensitive and very sweet. He’s an easy going, lovely natured boy but can be a little timid initially when meeting new people.
FAVOURITE THINGS: Tank loves cuddles, play and pats and enjoys chasing his ball and playing with the children in his foster home. He also has a stuffed duck that he adores and carries around with him. He is a typical puppy with bursts of energy where he plays for a while then settles down for a snuggle and snooze before waking up and doing it all over again!
ENDEARING FEATURES: Tank is a calm boy who loves to lay around and receive cuddles from his people.
OTHER ANIMALS: Being a young puppy, he will get on well with other friendly dogs after gentle, supervised introductions. He is currently being fostered with an older resident dog who he does interact with, and Tank understands when the older dog wants to be left alone. He could live with a dog-savvy, confident cat, again after gentle introduction.
GENERAL INFO: Tank will need training for pretty much everything being so young. Housetraining is underway but he still has some way to go to master it. Expect accidents while he’s settling into his new home and routine! He will bark to get attention and does get nervous around new people and unknown objects - gentle, sensitive exposure is key. He is crate trained and he understands it is his safe space so we would ask that his new home continue with that security. He knows a few commands already and will benefit greatly from attending puppy school and ongoing classes into adulthood where he can gain confidence - this is a commitment we will expect from his new owner. We expect Tank to be medium sized but there are no guarantees.
ESSENTIALS for Tank:
** a quiet, active, loving home where someone is there for most of the day, essential in the first six months after adoption
** a home where he is treated as part of the family and is allowed to be inside or out as he needs and to sleep inside at night
** a decent sized, well fenced garden where he can run, play, sniff and explore in safety
** attendance at puppy school and continued training into adulthood for him to learn and grow confidence – essential
** continued positive, gentle exposure and socialisation
Tank would benefit from having a confident dog in the home to befriend him so he can follow their lead.
Tank will have bursts of energy while a pup and we envisage will have medium energy as an adult dog.
Tank could live with dog-savvy gentle children over 10 years of age, depending on experience, who will play and interact with him but know when to give him space. He would do better in a quieter, calm home that is not too busy or overwhelming.
