Meet Chester & Lucy
Chester and Lucy are two bonded sweet senior dogs who have arrived in foster care and are showing us just how much love they have to give.
Both are affectionate, gentle and incredibly people-oriented. They love pats, cuddles and belly rubs, and both will happily wriggle their little bodies around trying to get your hands on them. Despite everything they have been through, they are happy little dogs who have already settled into their new surroundings beautifully.
They are independent too and don't need to be entertained every minute of the day.
When their human is busy or leaves them home alone for a few hours, both are happy to retreat to their beds for a nap, with Lucy enjoying curling up in her crate or couch during the day and Chester, anywhere he can soak up the sunshine. They sleep together at night in the loungeroom pen and have settled into their daily routine well.
Chester
Chester is a tiny, sweet old gentleman with a huge personality packed into a little body.
He has limited vision and hearing, so he experiences the world a little differently. He often feels his way around a new environment with his paws and needs people to let him know they are nearby by speaking loudly and allowing him to smell them before touching him. He can startle if approached unexpectedly, so his new family will need to be patient and considerate of his sensory limitations.
But Chester doesn't let any of this stop him.
He loves exploring and sniffing around and is remarkably resilient. He worked out how to use the doggy door within hours and will cautiously investigate steps and things around the house until he settles in. He likes knowing where his person is and will happily supervise from his pen before eventually falling asleep.
His big blue eyes and happy little face are impossible to resist. He is a real little old man who seems determined to get on with life despite his aging body.
Chester loves cuddling up beside his person on the couch and happily rolls onto his back for belly rubs and loves being tickled, playfully pawing for more. He has occasionally given a tiny cry when being picked up, so his foster carer suspects he may be sore due to some joint pain in his hips and knees. He does howeverenjoy being held and laying on you or beside you. He will need a family who understands that he needs gentle handling.
He is so joyous and has a real zest for life and loves playing with toys.
Lucy
Lucy is an absolute softy.
She is affectionate, loving and happiest when she can be close to her person. She looks at you with her beautiful brown eyes as though you are her whole worldand would happily climb onto your lap for cuddles and kisses.
She can get very excited when she sees her person or food and currently jumps up enthusiastically — sometimes without noticing poor Chester is underneath her! Her foster carer is gently working on this and Lucy is learning to share her carer's affection with Chester, now sitting when asked. She is improving daily with patience and consistency.
Lucy has learnt many commands such as sit, wait, come and toilet. She is very clever and aims to please and learnt to use the doggy door within just a couple of hours.
Although she is house trained, she can be a little nervous when she isn't sure what is happening / new environment and has had some accidents inside. She willneed a patient adopter who can continue helping her establish a reliable toileting routine.
Lucy can be startled by sudden noises such as a dropped pan lid, although interestingly a noisy blender doesn't seem to bother her much! Her carer is working on desensitising her to household noises.
What their ideal home looks like
These two would love a quiet, loving home with someone who appreciates the gentle companionship of senior dogs.
Their ideal family would be:
Affectionate and happy to give plenty of cuddles.
Patient and understanding of their age and individual needs.
Comfortable continuing a regular toileting routine, particularly for Lucy.
Able to provide easy access to a safe outdoor area.
Happy with a relatively quiet lifestyle rather than expecting long walks or lots of activity.
Understanding that Chester needs extra care because of his limited sight and hearing.
Gentle and mindful when handling Chester, particularly until veterinary needs have been addressed.
Life with Chester & Lucy
These two have already shown that they don't need much to be happy.
A cosy bed. A safe place to potter around. Good food. A person who loves them. And, most importantly, patience.
They both absolutely love their food and happily eat whatever is offered. They have also shown themselves to be remarkably adaptable — both worked out the doggy door within hours of arriving, slept and ate well from day 1 and warmed to their carer within minutes.
Neither has shown aggression in foster care and Lucy has started giving kisses. Their response to other dogs, cats and children has not yet been fully assessed, so these introductions will need to be handled appropriately however they've shown no signs of reactivity at the vet, to other dogs barking in the distance or when dogs pass by the backyard fence line.
After some initial alert barks, they quickly warm to visitors and happily snuggle up with them, if allowed.
Chester and Lucy may not be looking for an adventurous life filled with long hikes and busy days. What they seem to want most is a safe, comfortable retirement with someone who will appreciate their sweet personalities and give them the chance to simply be loved.
Their foster carer knows you'll fall in love with them just like everybody that has met them has as well as their carer!
If you're looking for a pair of gentle senior companions who will reward you with endless cuddles, adoring eyes and plenty of personality, Chester and Lucy would love to meet you.

All our dogs are desexed, C5 vaccinated with intranasal, microchipped,
wormed, and flea treated. All necessary vetwork such as dentals,
surgery, eye treatment are also carried out. We are no longer heartworm
testing as we have not had one positive test since we began in 2006. If
a dog comes to us on heartworm treatment this is continued.

Adoption details
We are a community fostercare network, not a shelter, and our dogs and cats are cared for in private homes. Note that we are very careful where we rehome our dogs and cats and we have an intensive process. If you want a quick turnaround we are not the group for you. If you seem like a good match for the dog of your choice we will organise a telephone chat, a meet and greet and a property check. We offer free assistance for six weeks for any issues, a lifetime takeback policy with full refund of the adoption fee, and will always be available to offer advice.
We care for our dogs and cats and we want you to as well. We know that genuine applicants have no trouble with this process and understand that if we refuse you a dog or cat, it is because you are not the best match for that pet.
Our commitment to the dogs and cats in our care is total and we treat each one as if we are passing on a family pet. This may not suit you so we point out that there are equally great dogs and cats available in pounds, shelters and with other rescue groups.
