About Charlie
Sometimes a dog comes to us who is so broken that it can take months for us to see any progress.
With these special cases, it is always extremely difficult to know when it will be better for them to stay in our care indefinitely or continue their journey towards healing with their forever humans.
Charlie is one of those cases.
Charlie has been in our care for over 3 months. Before he came to us, he had lived in multiple homes, and he had deteriorated in all of them. Unfortunately, in our opinion, Charlie had been set up to fail.
Charlie is a very timid and anxious boy, and his last home was probably his worst nightmare. Not only were their small children, but his home was also a business, with lots of visitors coming and going.
This was not a case of them being awful people, they cared enough to reach out to us for help. It was a clear case of putting the wrong dog in the wrong home and it was never going to end well for anyone.
When Charlie arrived, he was a mess. He shook with fear. He had lived in such a state of panic that there was very little that we could do initially except keep him safe.
We found that Charlie really likes 2 things in life. Food and doggie friends. He feels more secure with a confident dog beside him and he lets his guard down completely if there is a chance of a tasty snack!
Please let me be clear, at no time has Charlie ever been aggressive. He would rather flee. Loud noises, unpredictability and children, even older ones, all terrify him and he much prefers women to men.
Recently, we spoke to our vet about starting medication for Charlie, to help him overcome his anxiety and we are really starting to see a difference. Charlie is actually going for walks on lead and he has been to our Saturday doggie outing days a few times now and enjoyed it.
So, we are at a crossroad with Charlie. We think that if we could find his perfect home, he would thrive, but it would have to be perfect.
So, what does Charlie’s perfect home look like?
Charlie would do best in a home where someone was home most of the time. Preferably a female only home. He would love a confident doggie friend who he could snuggle up with and learn from. A quiet, calm, predictable home with a routine and only the occasional visitor and definitely no children. Charlie is crate trained and if something out of the ordinary is happening or Charlie is finding things a bit scary, a crate that he can retreat to will help him to feel secure.
Charlie is a 2year old, 5 kg Toy Poodle. He needs regular grooming, but he handles that ok.
We know that we are looking for a unicorn adopter, but we also know that she is out there.
Please do not apply unless you actually want to commit long term. Obviously, please take into account Charlie’s age if you are a senior as we would hate to see Charlie go through another trauma.
Charlie is located in Kingaroy QLD.
