COULD YOU BE CHEEKY CHARLIES NEXT CHAPTER?

2 weeks ago, we rescued 4-year-old Charlie, a female shepherd that was experiencing a life-threatening infection in her uterus, after having been used for breeding over and over again. Charlie had not one, but 2 life-saving surgeries, our community stood behind her, praying that she would make it through.

Charlie has been recovering in foster care ever since, yesterday she got the all clear from the vet and has healed beautifully. Charlie is well and truly over being crate rested and is ready to start living the life she has always dreamed of. Charlie is looking for her next chapter, whether it be a temporary foster home or as a foster with the view to adopt.

Charlie is a working line German Shepherd and is clever, motivated by both food and toys, playful, and wants to please; she is everything you want a shepherd to be. Charlie loves learning new things and has had some prior training, she knows her basic commands and a few extra tricks. Charlie hasn’t been out on a leash recently until coming into our care, so her leash manners will need some work in her new home. Charlie is an active girl and will need plenty of physical exercise; her brain also needs to be put to use through training, play, games and enrichment.

Charlie is being re-introduced to the world and takes most things in her stride, despite being 4 years old, she resembles a much younger dog who is still finding her place and experiencing things. Charlie can at times be quite puppy-like in her interactions and become mouthy when excited, whilst she isn’t a huge jumper, she would benefit from practising her impulse control and manners. Charlie would be best suited to a home where everyone is over the age of 5 and who have large breed experience.

Charlie is very people-focused, she loves her humans and is a friend to everyone she meets, especially if they have treats or want to play. Charlie loves to cuddle and has no interest in personal space, she will be a typical German Shadow, involving herself in daily chores and activities. Charlie is a bit of a dork; she is funny, cheeky and just steals your heart from the moment you meet her.

Charlie is very conflicted with other dogs, having only interacted with others when being bred from for so long, she is wary of their intentions and is lacking in dog social skills. Charlie has had some success co-existing in close proximity with another dog, but has been struggling with up close interactions, she is very unsure. When Charlie feels nervous on walks, she will bark voicing her concerns, however, is very easy to distract and re-engage with her handler.

Charlie will need to build her confidence up overtime, she needs to have positive experiences and work her way up to meeting others, knowing that she is safe and nothing bad will happen to her. For now, Charlie would be happiest as the only dog in her new home, she needs time to decompress and settle in without the pressure of constantly interacting with another dog, that is a goal both Charlie and her new human can work towards.
