About Hugo
🐾 Meet Hugo 🐾
Hugo is a handsome Standard Groodle weighing around 22kg, with a gentle soul and so much love waiting to be discovered. ❤️
Hugo has spent his entire life living on a farm and has recently retired from his life as a stud dog. Coming into our care and experiencing life in a suburban home is therefore completely new to him.
When Hugo first arrived, he was understandably very scared and wary. He was disoriented and unsure of his new surroundings, avoided his foster family and spent quite a bit of time pacing around trying to work out what was happening.
But one thing Hugo was absolutely certain about from day one… meal time! 😂 He certainly didn’t let his nerves stop him from enjoying his dinner!
Thankfully, by the very next day we could already see a little glimpse of the real Hugo. He became more relaxed, his cheeky personality started to emerge and he began coming out of his shell. He has been running around the backyard, playing with the other dogs and eating as though there is no tomorrow!
Hugo is still a little wary, which is completely understandable after such a huge change in his life. However, when approached slowly, gently and respectfully, he will happily accept cuddles and enjoy the affection being given to him.
Underneath that initial nervousness is a sweet, loving and affectionate boy who enjoys attention, pats and being around people. Hugo simply needs time, patience and understanding while he learns that his life has changed from being a stud dog living on a farm to being a much-loved family pet.
Hugo appears to get along well with other dogs. However, he can be a little protective of his food, so he will need to be fed separately from other dogs.
His coat is currently growing back and, once fully grown, it will become curly like a Poodle’s coat. He will therefore need regular brushing at home and professional grooming approximately every 4–5 weeks.
Hugo is an energetic boy and, having spent his life on a farm, he is used to having plenty of space to move around. He will need a home with a decent-sized, securely fenced backyard and a family committed to providing him with adequate daily exercise.
He will also need some help learning the basics of suburban life, including walking nicely on a lead and general obedience training. The good news is that Hugo is an intelligent and very food-motivated boy, so we are confident he will learn quickly with positive reinforcement, patience and consistency. ❤️
Hugo is a solid boy but is currently on the skinny side and would ideally gain another 1–2kg. We don’t think this will be too difficult for Hugo, judging by the enthusiasm he brings to every meal! 😂
At the moment, Hugo has Royal Canin and Ziwi kibbles available throughout the day, raw chicken necks for lunch and a healthy, meaty home-cooked meal for dinner. And yes… he cleans his bowl every single time! 🥰
Most importantly, Hugo is looking for a home where he is truly considered a member of the family.
He does not want to be a dog who is simply left outside in the backyard. He wants to be inside with his humans, with access to a securely fenced backyard through a doggy door. He deserves to discover the simple pleasures he has probably never experienced before — curling up on the couch beside his humans, receiving endless pats and cuddles, being part of family life and finally knowing what it feels like to be truly loved and cared for. ❤️
Hugo has already taken some beautiful little steps forward, and we know there is so much more of his personality waiting to come out.
He doesn’t need perfection.
He needs time, patience, kindness and love.
