Rusty

From a rough start to a cuddle champion

Rusty may share his name with a certain shade of orange, but there is nothing faded about this lovely boy’s personality. Once he feels safe, he is affectionate, gentle and completely devoted to his people.

Rusty was found abandoned and tied outside the Katanning Shire offices. Understandably frightened, he initially warned unfamiliar people to keep their distance. With patience and kindness, he allowed himself to be rescued and has since shown just how much love he has to give. A veterinary examination found him to be in generally good health, although he was slightly underweight.

Now living in foster care with a loving family, Rusty is discovering that people can be kind and home life can be rather wonderful. He loves cuddles, spending time with his carers and being included in daily life. He is happiest when he has plenty of human companionship and would prefer not to be left alone for long periods.

Rusty has a lovely balance of adventure and relaxation. He enjoys a daily walk, travels well in the car and would be delighted to join his people on outings. He walks beautifully on lead, has good recall and knows an impressive collection of cues, including sit, stay, paw, lie down, come, out and off. After his adventures, he is equally happy to settle in for a long nap.

One of Rusty’s favourite activities is having a bath, closely followed by a joyful case of the post-bath zoomies!

Rusty is toilet trained, has good manners inside the home and does not attempt to jump fences or escape. He enjoys playing fetch and has been comfortable spending up to four hours alone during the working week.

Because of his difficult start, Rusty can be frightened by unfamiliar noises, objects and people. On walks, he may stop and watch strangers while he works out whether everything is safe. He needs calm introductions, patience and the freedom to approach new experiences at his own pace. Once he trusts you, his loving and cuddly nature shines through.

A quieter home with patient people who can offer plenty of companionship, regular walks and gentle adventures would suit Rusty well. He has not lived with children, and his response to dogs, cats and other animals is currently unknown, so any introductions would need to be carefully managed.

Fostering means we have been able to learn about Rusty’s personality, routines and needs while he experiences life as part of a family. SAFE does not have a shelter to visit, but that does not stop you from adopting. Simply submit an adoption application, and we can arrange an easy meet and greet with Rusty and his foster family.
