About Gilbert
Gilbert would like it known that he is a complex gentleman. A connoisseur of treats. A hunter of toys. A fierce critic of split-system heating. And, quite frankly, a little bit unhinged in the most entertaining way possible.
Gilbert struggled in the shelter environment, where all the noise, activity and constant change made it difficult for him to relax and show his true personality. Since moving into foster care, however, he's come on in leaps and bounds. Given the time and space to settle, Gilbert has revealed himself to be a funny, affectionate and wonderfully quirky companion who keeps his humans thoroughly entertained.
One thing that's become clear is that Gilbert thrives on routine. A good play session in the morning and another in the evening are the key to his happiness. Once he's had the chance to burn off some energy and indulge his inner predator, he's much more likely to settle down and enjoy the comforts of home. He's also a huge fan of treat tubes, especially when they're spread across a plate and can be savoured with maximum dedication and concentration.
Like any true diva, Gilbert has some opinions. For example, split-system heating is apparently highly suspicious. Turn it on and Gilbert may relocate to the hallway while muttering his complaints under his breath. We don't fully understand the reasoning, but we're respecting his boundaries on this one.
Gilbert has made fantastic progress, though he can still occasionally become overstimulated during pats and attention. The good news is that his foster carers have learnt his signals, and these moments are becoming increasingly rare. When he starts getting a little too excited, a quick redirection with a treat works wonders, and he's now far more settled and relaxed than when he first arrived.
Gilbert is looking for an adults-only household. While he is an affectionate and rewarding companion, he has absolutely no concept of moderation when it comes to playtime. His enthusiasm can only be described as chaotic, and his zoomies are powered by what appears to be an unlimited energy source. For this reason, he would be best suited to a home without young children, where his larger-than-life personality can be appreciated and managed appropriately.
The ideal adopter for Gilbert is someone who understands that some cats need a little extra time and management to become their best selves. In return, you'll get a cat with endless character, a fantastic sense of humour, and enough sass to keep life interesting. He may not be the easiest cat you'll ever meet, but he'll almost certainly be one of the most memorable.
If you're looking for a perfectly behaved, predictable cat, Gilbert is probably not your guy.
If you're looking for a hilarious, quirky, affectionate little lunatic who will make you laugh every day and keep you on your toes, Gilbert is waiting to meet you.
Gilbert is part of our Rescue or Rehome program, where we are committed to finding homes for cats and kittens who simply cannot cope in the shelter environment.
