🐾 Getting to Know Voltaire

Voltaire is a deeply affectionate, people-loving boy who thrives on human company. He has velvety-smooth fur, long silky ears and warm, loving brown eyes. He loves affection and cuddles and is happiest when he can be your shadow, keeping an eye on all the household goings-on.

Eager to please and quick to learn, he genuinely enjoys being with his people and is discovering just how wonderful life can be when he feels safe, secure, and loved.

🎓 Training & Life at Home

Voltaire has lovely manners in the home. He is fully toilet trained, waits before eating his food, shares his toys and happily settles in his crate to sleep or relax.

He enjoys learning and responds beautifully to positive reinforcement. He already knows sit, drop, stay, wait, leave it, mat, and paw, and is eager to learn more.

🐕 Walks & Adventures

Voltaire enjoys long, sniffy walks and being out and about with his people. He is generally good on the lead and can be walked on a harness, collar or halti.

He usually passes people and dogs calmly, although he can occasionally pull to meet other dogs—particularly black dogs, who seem to hold a special fascination for him! He is learning polite greetings and improving every day.

Like many Labradors, Voltaire has a wonderful talent for finding interesting smells and can become very enthusiastic about thoroughly investigating them all. 👃

🚗 Car Rides

Voltaire is a superstar in the car and absolutely loves going for drives.

It doesn't matter whether it's an exciting adventure, a café trip, visiting his foster mum's friends or simply running a few errands—Voltaire is delighted to come along.

🐶 Life with Other Dogs

In foster care, Voltaire enjoys the company of his older foster sister, another black Labrador. They share zoomies, games, and plenty of fun.

Voltaire is a younger, stronger Labrador and is still learning that his enthusiastic play can sometimes be overwhelming and that other dogs need time and space to rest.

He would be very happy as an only dog, where he can soak up all the attention, but he could also live with a compatible dog of similar size and energy who enjoys social play.

However, a canine companion is optional. Voltaire's greatest happiness comes from being close to his people, and another dog should never be expected to replace human companionship.

❤️ Building Confidence

After the difficult chapter he has recently come through, Voltaire forms very strong attachments to his people and does experience separation anxiety.

He may bark when his people leave, as he is still learning that being alone is safe and that they will always return. He can settle in his crate for limited periods, but he needs a patient and understanding home to continue building his confidence.

With gentle, consistent reassurance, he is already making progress. His new family will need to understand that learning to feel secure takes time and help him discover that departures are temporary, not abandonment.

🏡 His Ideal Home

Voltaire would suit a home where someone is around most of the time, such as a home worker, retiree, or a family with a flexible lifestyle.

He would thrive in a family environment where he can enjoy the attention and companionship of several people rather than becoming completely dependent on one person.

Because of his enthusiasm around food, he would be best suited to dog-savvy children aged 12+ who understand and respect appropriate boundaries around dogs and food.

Voltaire will need a secure backyard, but he must also be an indoor dog, included in everyday family life and treated as a true member of the household.

He will thrive with an owner who is committed to ongoing training, enrichment, daily exercise, and plenty of companionship, helping him continue to grow into a confident and fulfilled adult dog.
