Abbey is a cuddly bundle of puppy joy looking forward to her forever life. This sweetie was dumped at a rural pound with her littermates and sadly left behind as the others were adopted. She was taken in by the kind owner of a local animal sanctuary but, without an active doggy playmate, became a bit too enthusiastic with her fellow ducks and lambs, so has now moved to the big smoke, where she is learning all about suburban life.
With the blood of two working breeds running through her veins, Abbey is whip smart, already house trained (with regular outdoor access) and will sit and wait to be given permission before eating her dinner. She loves to unpack her toy box and throw her things about, and is still in the 'chewing interesting things' phase, but responds well to gentle redirection. Abbey enjoys car rides, loves splashing in any kind of water, sleeps well through the night in the living room (but likes to sneak a morning cuddle on her people's bed), and settles well when left alone with other pets for short periods. She is full of energy and needs plenty of physical and mental exercise to keep her entertained and develop her skills.
While a delightful companion to people she trusts, Abbey had a rough start and currently fears strangers, particularly men. She is not aggressive but will warn people off with a bark or two if she feels hemmed in. In foster care, however, she has shown that she quickly warms to household people and is able to overcome her wariness of men when she is not crowded. She loves other dogs once she gets to know them, and currently enjoys playing with her current foster Labrador and cuddling up with the older resident dog 😊. Abbey has previously lived well with multiple kittens and cats. Because of her herding instincts, she is not good with birds and pocket pets. Left to her own devices outside, Abbey sometimes digs for freedom and needs supervision and/or dig-proof fencing to keep her safe.
Abbey needs an active dog-savvy home with a female presence and people who understand that she will need patience, space and confidence building to live her best life. Abbey would enjoy living with a kind and playful adult dog and could live with dog-tolerant cats with appropriate introductions. She will benefit from structured training and opportunities to stretch her paws and brains, via regular exercise and exploration, puzzles and games. Abbey will need continued work on her leash training and a decent backyard to burn off some energy. She may well become a candidate for agility training once she is more comfortable with new people and places. This smart and loving girl is looking for people willing to give her the time and space she needs to adjust to life's big changes. She will return this support with cuddles, fun and the rewards of watching her grow into the amazing dog she is destined to be. She is a truly beautiful girl, filled with potential. All our dogs are desexed, C5 vaccinated with intranasal, microchipped,
wormed, and flea treated. All necessary vetwork such as dentals,
surgery, eye treatment are also carried out. We are no longer heartworm
testing as we have not had one positive test since we began in 2006. If
a dog comes to us on heartworm treatment this is continued.

Adoption details
We are a community fostercare network, not a shelter, and our dogs and cats are cared for in private homes. Note that we are very careful where we rehome our dogs and cats and we have an intensive process. If you want a quick turnaround we are not the group for you. If you seem like a good match for the dog of your choice we will organise a telephone chat, a meet and greet and a property check. We offer free assistance for six weeks for any issues, a lifetime takeback policy with full refund of the adoption fee, and will always be available to offer advice.
We care for our dogs and cats and we want you to as well. We know that genuine applicants have no trouble with this process and understand that if we refuse you a dog or cat, it is because you are not the best match for that pet.
Our commitment to the dogs and cats in our care is total and we treat each one as if we are passing on a family pet. This may not suit you so we point out that there are equally great dogs and cats available in pounds, shelters and with other rescue groups.

Unfortunately we usually will not have time to reply to enquiries in more detail and will give priority to completed applications over enquiries. Priority will also be given to typed applications which are easier for us to read and to copy relevant parts.
