About Ted
Ted is a senior Kelpie who is a beautiful, loyal and sensitive boy looking for a calm, loving home where he can feel safe and have plenty of companionship.
He is a real softie once he gets to know you and absolutely loves being by your side.
He will happily follow you around the house and is very content simply being inside with his people.
Ted is happiest in a calm and stable environment and would suit someone who is around the home a lot and wants a companion dog.
He is not suited to being left alone for long periods.
If he is left alone for too long, he can become anxious and bark.
He can also bark when there are lots of unfamiliar people coming and going, particularly tradespeople, as this makes him feel unsettled and protective.
Personality and home life:
- Ted is very loyal and affectionate once he trusts you. He loves being around his people and is happy to spend most of the day relaxing inside. He doesn't need a huge amount of exercise due to his arthritis – a gentle walk and time with his people is enough for him.
- Ted currently takes Entrip twice a day to help manage his anxiety and receives a monthly Cartrophen injection for his arthritis.
- Ted is a sensitive boy and can be fearful of some men, particularly tradespeople or unfamiliar men entering the home.
He can be protective at the front door when unfamiliar people arrive and may bark when strangers are around the house.
He can also become unsettled when there are lots of unfamiliar people coming and going, particularly tradespeople.
- He is also sensitive to loud noises, flashing lights and the dark.
Because of this, he would be best suited to a calm and stable household without lots of change or unfamiliar people constantly coming and going. This is particularly important as he is currently experiencing a lot of disruption and change in his environment, including ongoing building work and tradespeople coming and going.
Children:
- Ted has lived with children of lots of different ages and has been great with all of them.
- He is very good with children and has been a gentle and loving part of family life.
- He can become anxious or overstimulated when there is a lot happening around the pool, particularly children swimming, splashing and running around. This is more of a trigger for him than the children themselves.
Because the pool environment can be quite triggering for him, he would probably be best suited to a home without a pool.
Dogs:
- Ted is selective with other dogs. He has lived and played with a Kelpie/Labrador cross and has also spent time with an older Labradoodle.
- He does best when other dogs give him space and allow him to approach them in his own time. If another dog is calm and respectful of his boundaries, he is generally okay. He does not enjoy dogs that run straight up to him, are very boisterous or continually pester him.
He would therefore need careful introductions with any resident dog and would be best matched with a calm, respectful dog.
- Not suited with Cats or Chickens
Walking and training:
- Ted walks well on the lead. He may pull a little bit at the beginning of a walk when he is excited, but settles quickly and is actually very good once he gets going.
- He is used to walking beside a pram.
- He has great recall when off the lead and knows a number of commands, including sit, down, wait, come, up and eat.
What Ted is looking for:
- Ted is looking for a calm, stable home where his people are around and he can be part of everyday life.
- He would thrive with someone who understands that he is a sensitive dog who needs time to warm up to new people and dogs, rather than expecting him to immediately be comfortable.
His ideal home would:
• Have someone around the home more often than not
• Allow Ted to spend lots of time inside with his people
• Be calm and stable, without lots of change or disruption
• Have limited unfamiliar people coming and going
• Understand that he can be nervous around some men, particularly tradespeople
• Give him time and space to warm up to new people
• Introduce him slowly and respectfully to other dogs
• Not have chickens or other small farm animals
• Ideally not have a pool
• Be prepared to continue managing his anxiety and arthritis
• Understand that he may bark if left alone for extended periods or if there are lots of unfamiliar people or tradespeople coming and going
Ted has so much love to give and is a wonderful companion when he feels safe and settled. He really just wants to be near his people, follow them around and be part of the family. We are hoping to find him a home where he can have the calmness, attention and stability that he deserves.

Adoption details
We list animals for adoption on Pet Rescue as well as on our own Animals-in-Need-Brisbane website. We talk with people who contact about an animal to see what their needs and situation are. Our emphasis is on getting the right animal for the people and the right people for the animal. If everyone's needs are met things usually work out well.
If the situation sounds good we arrange a meeting. If all goes well we let people try the animal out for a couple of weeks to ensure that everyone is happy.
We keep records of all adopters, follow up to ensure all is well and undertake to take back any animal if circumstances change.
