Duke 🖤 | Private Surrender

Meet Duke, a handsome 2-year-old desexed male Rottweiler looking for his next chapter.

Duke is a big, cheeky, affectionate boy with a personality all of his own. He absolutely loves his people, adores cuddles, gets ridiculously excited when you come home and loves to train. He’s clever, playful and has plenty of personality — including a talent for stealing things when he thinks there might be a treat involved! 🐾

Duke’s family have made the difficult decision to surrender him because they are no longer able to give him the time, attention, exercise and consistent training he needs.

Duke is not a straightforward placement and will need an experienced Rottweiler home. His current family report significant issues around children, particularly their daughter. He can become overly excited and rough in his interactions, chase children, jump on them and bark aggressively in certain situations. For this reason, Duke is not suitable for a home with children or regular visiting children.

He also has some resource-guarding behaviours. If he steals something, he may growl or snap if someone attempts to take it from him, so his family have been using trades with treats rather than physically taking items away.

Duke has previously received training and attended boarding school, and his family feel this has helped to some degree. He knows basic obedience including sit, stay, drop it, off and no, and has also learnt some fun tricks such as paw, drop, stay and twirl. He enjoys training and would benefit enormously from someone who genuinely enjoys working with a big, intelligent dog.

Around other dogs, Duke is curious and excitable. His experience has been limited and mostly on lead, so slow, structured socialisation would be needed. A carefully matched female dog may be possible, but this should be assessed individually.

Cats and livestock are a no. Duke has never lived with cats or livestock and is considered likely to chase them. He does chase birds and possums.

Duke can be nervous and overwhelmed at the vet and requires a muzzle. He also needs to be managed carefully around grooming — he dislikes brushing and the dryer and has required a muzzle when washed.

His family describe him as a dog who deserves a home where someone can invest the time into consistent training, exercise and structure. And underneath the challenges, they clearly adore him.

• Adults only
• No children or regular visiting children
• No cats or livestock
• Secure, fully fenced property
• Someone home more than his current routine allows
• Confident handler committed to ongoing training
• Plenty of exercise, enrichment and mental stimulation
• Someone prepared to work with his resource guarding and reactivity
• Slow, carefully managed dog introductions if another dog is considered

Duke isn’t looking for just any home. He needs the right home.

This is a private surrender and all information provided by his current family has been disclosed so that we can find Duke a placement that is safe, realistic and genuinely suited to him.

Duke’s surrender information reports that he has previously bitten a person during an incident involving correction for rough play, resulting in broken skin/blood/bruising. This was not reported. This history will need to be taken seriously by any prospective foster/adoptive home.
