🐾 Meet Rex 🐾

Rex is a big, goofy, ridiculously endearing boy with a heart every bit as large as he is. He has the exuberance of a puppy, fur like velvet and absolutely no idea how big he actually is. In Rex’s mind, he’s quite possibly a lap dog – and he’ll happily attempt to prove it! He’s affectionate, enthusiastic and happiest when he’s involved in whatever his people are doing.

What Rex craves more than anything is connection. He doesn’t just want to be fed, exercised and left to his own devices – he wants to be part of your life. Even food is fairly low on his priority list unless it’s something you’re doing together, such as hand-feeding him or, preferably, sharing YOUR food! Rex thrives on interaction, attention and companionship.

He loves getting out and about and enjoys walks, hiking, bike rides, swimming and games of fetch. If there’s water nearby, you’ll probably find him in it – pools, sprinklers, puddles… if it’s wet, Rex is having fun! He walks beautifully with his foster dad and would make a fantastic companion for someone who enjoys an active lifestyle.

Rex knows some basic commands, including sit, come and wait, but he has a very short attention span and isn’t naturally focused or particularly food motivated. He doesn’t know how to heel, and training needs to be interesting and engaging to keep his attention. Rex responds best when he feels he’s doing something WITH his person rather than simply working for a treat.

Rex is very social and loves other dogs. He currently lives as the only dog in his foster home, but attends doggy daycare once a week and absolutely loves it. He has previously lived happily with dogs and cats and has been respectful when another dog tells him they’re not interested in playing. He has also spent time around livestock, where his initial curiosity quickly turned into disinterest. He can sometimes be possessive of toys, so sensible management around high-value items is important. A property with other animals could be a wonderful fit for Rex, particularly with an owner who enjoys having their dog alongside them throughout the day and would include him in everyday activities. Whether he’s helping with jobs, heading off on an adventure or simply hanging out with you, Rex wants to be part of the action.

He’s fully toilet trained, travels well in a secure travel crate and settles nicely after exercise and interaction. He’s also wonderfully entertaining, with a flair for the dramatic that has stayed with him since puppyhood. Before an exciting outing, he can celebrate with enthusiastic howls, moans and happy dances. And when he finally crashes, Rex dreams heavily and talks in his sleep – apparently with plenty to say, judging by the variety of conversations happening from his bed!

Rex can become extremely excited when visitors arrive or when it’s time for an adventure, and he can jump up without realising the effect his enthusiasm can have. His new family will need to continue working on calmer greetings and appropriate ways to channel all that excitement.

Being left alone is one of Rex’s biggest challenges. He does not cope well with being on his own and can become destructive both inside and outside the home. He needs plenty of companionship, interaction, structure and appropriate outlets rather than being expected to entertain himself for long periods.

Rex is looking for an experienced home that understands energetic dogs and is realistic about his challenges. Give him your time, include him in your life and let him be part of the action, and you’ll have a wonderfully affectionate, funny and loyal companion who is absolutely convinced that wherever you are is exactly where he should be.
