About Schnitzel
# Meet Schnitzel – A Sunshine-Loving Senior Looking for His Perfect Retirement Home
At 9 years young, Schnitzel is ready to find a quiet retirement home where he can spend his days soaking up the sunshine, enjoying endless pats, and being close to the people he loves.
Schnitzel adores adults and thrives on companionship. He would be happiest in an adult-only home with someone who is home for most of the day. He's a loyal little shadow who simply wants to be wherever his favourite humans are. Whether it's a house with a backyard or an apartment with a sunny spot by the window, as long as there's sunshine and someone to love him, Schnitzel will be content.
## The Perfect Home
Schnitzel is looking for:
* Adult-only home (or older, dog-savvy teenagers)
* Someone home most of the day
* A calm household with routine and consistency
* A secure yard is a bonus, but not essential
* A family willing to continue his training and provide gentle guidance
He responds best to calm, confident leadership. Sometimes, if he's particularly comfortable, he'll decide he'd rather stay home than go for a walk! Luckily, Schnitzel is highly food motivated, and a tasty treat goes a long way in encouraging his cooperation.
## Clever Boy!
Schnitzel enjoys learning and loves showing off for treats. He already knows:
* Sit
* Down
* Touch
* Spin
* Middle (standing between your legs)
He's even toilet trained on command—simply say "toilet" and he'll know exactly what's expected.
Short training sessions are one of his favourite ways to stay mentally stimulated.
## Around the Home
Schnitzel sleeps soundly in his crate each night with a blanket partially covering it, creating the cosy den he loves. In a new home, he may initially want his crate closer to his people before gradually settling into his own sleeping area.
He's an easy-going companion who enjoys slow mornings, afternoon naps, and following the sun from room to room throughout the day.
When you arrive home, expect a very enthusiastic welcome! Schnitzel can become excited and vocal until he receives a few reassuring words and plenty of scratches.
## A Little Extra Support
Like many dogs adjusting to change, Schnitzel can experience separation anxiety in unfamiliar environments. Initially, he may cry when left alone, but once he feels safe and understands his routine, he settles beautifully.
Following the arrival of a new baby in his current home, Schnitzel spent more time outside than he was accustomed to, leading to increased anxiety and some barking behaviours. We believe these behaviours are largely situational and expect they will improve once he's settled back into a calm, predictable home where he can spend more time with his people.
During this transition he was prescribed Trazodone and Gabapentin to help him adjust. His new family should discuss any ongoing medication needs with their veterinarian.
## Other Pets & Children
Schnitzel enjoys the company of smaller dogs, particularly fellow Dachshunds, and has previously lived peacefully with Maltese Poodles.
Larger dogs make him uncomfortable, and he can become defensive around them, so he would prefer a home without large breed dogs.
Due to being nervous around children and having previously been quite angry when approached while enjoying a high-value treat, Schnitzel is seeking an adult-only home. Older, dog-savvy teenagers may be considered.
He is **not suitable for homes with cats.**
## Health
Schnitzel occasionally experiences dermatitis, which is easily managed with Cytopoint injections when required. Any patchy hair loss resolves quickly after treatment.
## Could You Be Schnitzel's Happy Ever After?
Schnitzel isn't asking for much—just a peaceful home, plenty of cuddles, sunny spots to snooze in, and someone who understands that senior dogs still have so much love to give.
If you're looking for a gentle, affectionate companion who will happily spend his retirement by your side, Schnitzel could be your perfect match.
