💕 About Onyx

Onyx recently came into our care after being surrendered by her previous owner. While change can be overwhelming, she has settled into the pound beautifully and has shown us what a lovely girl she truly is.

She is:
🐾 Friendly and affectionate
🐾 Super fluffy and absolutely stunning
🐾 Walks beautifully on lead
🐾 Clean in her kennel overnight
🐾 Loves human attention
🐾 Still very much a puppy at just 2 years old
🐾 Great with the friendly dogs she's met at the pound

She also knows sit... although, being an Akita, she'll happily decide whether she feels like listening today! 😂

Akitas are incredibly intelligent and independent thinkers, so obedience often comes with a little negotiation!

🧸 More Than Just A Pretty Face...

Akitas are often purchased because they're big, fluffy and look like giant teddy bears...

But they're also an extremely intelligent, powerful and confident working breed.

They aren't the type of dog that's happy being left in the backyard all day with nothing to do.

Onyx loves having her brain kept busy and enjoys enrichment, training and activities that challenge her mind. Without enough stimulation she can become bored, may howl when left alone and has been known to destroy toys simply because she's looking for something to do.

This isn't "bad behaviour"—it's simply a smart dog asking for a job!

🏡 What Home Is Onyx Looking For?

Onyx will thrive with a family who understands the Akita breed and appreciates their unique personalities.

Her ideal home will have:

✅ Previous Akita (or similar guardian breed) experience
✅ A secure grassed yard with room to explore
✅ Plenty of daily mental enrichment
✅ Ongoing training and structure
✅ A family committed to keeping her included in everyday life

Because Akitas are strong, intelligent and independent dogs, we do not recommend them for first-time dog owners.

She has not shown any fence jumping or escaping behaviours while in our care.

🐶 Other Pets

According to her previous owner, Onyx has previously lived with:
🐕 A male desexed German Shepherd
🐱 Cats
👧 Children

At the pound we are unable to safely test dogs with cats or children, so we cannot guarantee how she would behave in every home.

What we can say is that she has been friendly with the dogs she has met here and could happily live with a friendly, desexed male dog following successful introductions.
