Ollie

Ollie is proof that, with patience and understanding, frightened dogs can blossom into wonderful companions.

When Ollie first arrived in foster care, the world felt like a very overwhelming place. Like many dogs who have spent their lives in a backyard with very little socialisation, he was unsure of people and would often express his worries with a growl. Fast forward just a few weeks, and the transformation has been nothing short of incredible.

Today, Ollie is a loving, affectionate little boy who adores cuddles and snuggling up on the couch with his favourite person. He’ll happily let you know when he’d like a helping hand to get up beside you, because being close to his humans is one of his favourite places to be.

Ollie has settled beautifully into foster life. He enjoys wandering around the garden soaking up the sunshine, loves his meals (and knows exactly where his food bowl lives!), takes his turn politely when treats are handed out, and sleeps soundly through the night. He also travels well in the car, preferring to sit close to his person before quickly relaxing for the journey.

He has integrated well with his foster siblings and is very respectful around other dogs in the home. While he enjoys canine company, his foster carer believes he would also be happy as an only dog, provided he has plenty of love and companionship. He has also been relaxed meeting unfamiliar family members and calmly greeted another dog during a recent veterinary visit.

Ollie isn’t shy about using his voice! He can be a little bossy at times and still has a tendency to grumble or growl when he’s feeling uncertain or wants to communicate that he’s uncomfortable. These moments are generally short-lived and have improved significantly with calm, consistent handling, but his forever family will need to continue building on the wonderful progress he has already made. Ollie responds best to patient, positive training, gentle but clear boundaries, and owners who understand that his growl is his way of communicating rather than a sign of aggression. As his confidence grows, these behaviours continue to diminish.

Ollie walks nicely on lead, although his recent recovery from surgery (and having to wear the dreaded cone!) has limited his adventures. He is making excellent progress with toilet training, though he occasionally has a little puddle indoors. A home with easy access to the outdoors, such as a doggy door, would certainly help him continue building good habits.

Ollie has come so much further than anyone could have imagined in such a short time. He forms strong bonds with the people who show him kindness, and we’re confident he’ll flourish in a forever home willing to let him set the pace. Once you’ve earned his trust, you’ll be rewarded with a loyal, funny, affectionate little companion who simply wants to be close to the people he loves.
