Buster has been diagnosed with lower urinary tract disease, also known as feline idiopathic cystitis.
Description: This is a condition where inflammatory cells, crystals and mucous, accumulate in the urethra, and/or urethral muscle spasm occurs. It is thought to be triggered by an abnormal response to environmental stress. The nerves supplying the bladder are overstimulated, causing pain and inflammation. Most common causes of stress to cats are: conflict with other cats (in the home or outdoor with neighbours cats), lack of environmental stimulation, inappropriate litter trays or a change in routine causing acute stress (eg. moving house, new pet/baby, construction work). Other contributing factors can be obesity, low water intake and low activity
Long term dietary management is recommended - Hills C/D or C/D stress. These diets can help minimise recurrence of this condition.
