About Maggie
Meet Maggie ❤️German shepherd x Akita mix
Maggie is a very special girl with beautiful manners for such a young dog. She’s equal parts sweetheart and goofball, with the biggest heart and a personality that’s guaranteed to make you laugh. Her version of an intense game of fetch lasts about four throws before she’s ready for a well-earned nap. 😅
She absolutely adores people and thrives on affection. Pats, belly rubs, high fives and spending time with her humans are her favourite things. Despite her impressive “scary dog” appearance, Maggie is all bark and absolutely no bite—she happily makes friends wherever she goes and has been wonderful with children aged 3 and up, often choosing to quietly follow them around like their own little guardian.
Maggie is fantastic on lead for a large dog. She walks politely without pulling and is calm and well-mannered when passing people and other dogs. She’s fully toilet trained and will let you know when she needs to go outside.
She currently lives on a farm and is excellent around horses and livestock. She also free-roams with poultry. Every now and then she’ll decide the ducks should play with her, so she occasionally needs a gentle reminder to leave them alone, but she has never shown aggression towards them.
With other dogs, Maggie is generally very social and loves to play. Her only downfall is that she’s a little socially oblivious—if another dog is feeling unsure or doesn’t want to interact, Maggie doesn’t always pick up on those signals and can unintentionally annoy them. She has absolutely no malice; she’s simply an enthusiastic, goofy girl who sometimes needs a more tolerant canine friend.
She has chased a cat before, so any home with cats would need careful introductions. A confident, dog-savvy cat may do well, but because we can’t guarantee this, we’d recommend caution.
Maggie has a sensitive stomach, so she’s happiest when kept on a consistent, appropriate diet. She’s also a double-coated dog, which means she gets warm easily and drinks plenty of water. She enjoys having cool places to relax, especially during warmer weather, so a home that can offer shade and cool areas will suit her perfectly.
Her dream home would be a hobby farm or property where she can enjoy the outdoors without the demands of being a working dog. She currently comes to work with me every day as a farrier, travelling to lifestyle properties and horse farms. Some days she happily waits by the truck, while other days she gets to stretch her legs and explore. This routine has helped shape her into a calm, well-adjusted companion.
At home, Maggie is not destructive or disruptive. She happily spends 2–3 hours on her own in the evenings while I’m at the gym, especially if she’s left with a bone or dental chew to keep her occupied. She’s an intelligent dog who enjoys being included in everyday life, so she’d thrive in a home where she’s part of the family rather than left alone for long periods.
If you’re looking for a loyal best friend with a gentle nature, hilarious personality and just the right amount of goofy charm, Maggie might be the perfect addition to your famil
