ADOPTION FEE: $860 - covers all puppy vaccinations, desex, microchip and microchip transfer
NAME: Bennie
BEFORE SAFE ESPERANCE: Came to SAFE Esperance as an owner surrender
BREED: Shar Pei x
BREED TRAITS: Shar Pei’s were originally bred to guard, hunt, herd and fight but are now a companion dog. A calm, independent thinker, sometimes aloof, they are good watch dogs and devoted to their family. Early training is essential to counter their stubborn strong will, and socialisation with humans and dogs must begin early. Due to their short noses, they are prone to overheating, so need to be kept as an inside dog
************************************************************************
ASSETS: Easy going, affectionate, eager to please, friendly, confident, playful and very sweet!
FAVOURITE THINGS: Bennie loves to play with the other dogs in his foster home and loves his toys. He also enjoys playing fetch and tug of war. He is a typical puppy with bursts of energy where he plays for a while then settles down for a snooze before waking up and doing it all over again!
ENDEARING FEATURES: Bennie has a very affectionate nature and loves to be cuddled!
OTHER ANIMALS: Being a young puppy he will get on well with other friendly dogs after gentle, supervised introductions. He is being fostered with a cat but is overly focused at present and wants to chase. He may be able to live with a dog-savvy, confident cat that can stand its ground, if given appropriate introduction and training.
GENERAL INFO: Bennie will need training for pretty much everything being so young. Housetraining is going really well and he has nearly mastered it, but expect a few accidents while he’s settling into his new home and routine! He will bark at noises and knows a couple of basic commands already, but he’ll benefit greatly from puppy school and ongoing classes into adulthood where he can mix with other dogs, and this is a commitment we will expect from his new owner. Bennie is also crate trained and sleeps well in his crate at night
ESSENTIALS for Bennie:
** a loving home where someone is there for most of the day, essential in the first six months after adoption
** a home where he is treated as part of the family and is allowed to be inside or out as he needs and to sleep inside at night
** a decent sized, well fenced garden where he can run, play, sniff and explore in safety
** attendance at puppy school and continued training into adulthood for him to learn and grow confidence – essential
** continued positive, gentle exposure and socialisation
Bennie will have bursts of energy while a pup and we envisage will be medium energy as an adult dog. He could live with another young dog with similar energy to him who is happy to interact.
Bennie could live with dog-savvy gentle children over 8 years of age, who will interact with him gently but also know when to give him space.
