Born on Christmas Eve, Hunter is a handsome young working line German Shepherd Dog with all the loyalty, intelligence and devotion this wonderful breed is known for.
Hunter was desexed on 12 May 2026, when he was around 16 months old. We mention this because timing of desexing can be a consideration for some adopters of larger breeds, including German Shepherds.
Hunter is athletic, people-focused and very bonded to his humans. Like many German Shepherds, he wants to be where his people are and is happiest when included in daily life. He is not the sort of dog who will be content left alone in the backyard with nothing to do. He needs companionship, structure, training and a home that understands the needs of an intelligent working breed.
Hunter is a loyal, human-focused boy who will form a strong bond with his person or family. He is alert, responsive and eager to be involved, and in the right hands he has the potential to become a magnificent companion.
Being a working line German Shepherd, Hunter will need more than a daily pat and a short stroll around the block. He will benefit from regular exercise, ongoing training, mental stimulation and clear, consistent boundaries. A bored German Shepherd can become a creative German Shepherd, so his new family must be prepared to give him both physical and mental outlets.
Hunter is athletic and can jump fences. However, he does not tend to do this when he is with his people and settled in their company. His new home will need secure fencing and sensible management, particularly while he is settling in.
Hunter can be a little bossy around other male dogs, so he is best suited to a home with either no other dog or a compatible female dog. Any introduction would need to be done carefully and sensibly to make sure the match is right for everyone.
Hunter has not been tested with cats and, given his breed type and drive, we do not consider him likely to be cat friendly.
Hunter’s ideal home will be with people who understand German Shepherds and appreciate their intelligence, loyalty, sensitivity and need for leadership. Preference will be given to applicants with prior German Shepherd or working breed experience.
He is best suited to an active home where he will be welcomed as part of the family, given daily exercise, ongoing training and plenty of time with his people. He is not suited to a home where he will be left outside, under-stimulated or expected to manage himself.
For the right person, Hunter will be an exceptional dog — loyal, intelligent, athletic and deeply devoted.

Dogs:
(1) The first step is to complete the online adoption application form at https://southerndownsark.com.au/apply-to-adopt/ Please answer all questions and include photos of your yard and fencing.
(2) All applications will be considered by our Adoption Team, following which a "meet and greet" will be offered to the top-ranking applicant.
(3) If the “meet and greet" is successful, the applicant may adopt the dog and take him or her home the same day.
(4) For successful interstate applicants, different arrangements may apply and will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.
