Meet Cookie, an only-dog kind of guy
Cookie is a handsome, happy boy looking for a calm, adult-only home where he can truly thrive. He is a sweet, gentle companion who has been an absolute gentleman throughout his time in foster care. His foster carer describes him as affectionate, adaptable and a pleasure to live with.
While Cookie can be a little shy when first meeting new people, he warms up quickly and forms strong bonds once he feels comfortable. Thanks to ongoing socialisation, his initial reserve doesn't last long. He loves being around people and enjoys affection, while still being independent. He is still learning that keeping all four paws on the ground is the best way to ask for attention, but he is making excellent progress.
Cookie quickly settles into new routines and takes change in his stride. At present, he enjoys three walks each day, plus a short toilet break, although this is largely due to apartment living and providing him with plenty of mental stimulation. In a home with a secure backyard, he would likely be perfectly content with one good daily walk combined with opportunities to explore and relax at home.
Walks are one of Cookie's favourite activities. He is friendly, curious, and playful around other dogs when out and about and generally enjoys observing or greeting them. However, while he is happy to socialise on walks, Cookie would prefer to be the only dog in the home. He enjoys having his own space and does not cope so well with sharing a household with another dog.
Cookie is responding very well to training and has made enormous progress since entering foster care. He is much calmer and more relaxed on lead than when he first arrived and continues to improve every week. Like many adolescent dogs, however, he still likes to test boundaries from time to time. He will need an owner who can provide patient, consistent training and continue building on the excellent foundations already in place. His recall is not yet reliable and he can sometimes be selective about when he chooses to respond to commands, but he is a clever dog who is eager to learn with the right guidance.
In a previous home, Cookie experienced some anxiety-related challenges, including growling and being a bit snappy. However, he has shown none of these behaviours in foster care and has been consistently relaxed, affectionate and well-mannered in a calm adult environment.
At home, Cookie is a lovely balance of affection and independence. He enjoys spending time with his people, adapts quickly to household routines, and benefits from regular walks and enrichment to keep his active mind engaged. He also enjoys being pampered and is happy to have a bath or a brush.
If you have a quiet home, enjoy getting out for a daily walk, and are looking for a loyal companion with plenty of personality, Cookie could be the perfect addition to your family.
Health Notes: Cookie is in good overall health. He is not a fan of veterinary visits and will need a patient, understanding approach when attending appointments. Cookie did come to us on fluoxetine but we are weaning him off it.

Adoption details
We are a community fostercare network, not a shelter, and our dogs and cats are cared for in private homes. Note that we are very careful where we rehome our dogs and cats and we have an intensive process. If you want a quick turnaround we are not the group for you. If you seem like a good match for the dog of your choice we will organise a telephone chat, a meet and greet and a property check. We offer free assistance for six weeks for any issues, a lifetime takeback policy with full refund of the adoption fee, and will always be available to offer advice.
We care for our dogs and cats and we want you to as well. We know that genuine applicants have no trouble with this process and understand that if we refuse you a dog or cat, it is because you are not the best match for that pet.
Our commitment to the dogs and cats in our care is total and we treat each one as if we are passing on a family pet. This may not suit you so we point out that there are equally great dogs and cats available in pounds, shelters and with other rescue groups.
