If you've ever loved a Jack Russell Terrier, you'll understand Walter immediately.
He's bright, funny, affectionate, endlessly entertaining and just a little bit cheeky — all the things that make Jack Russells such wonderful companions.
Walter has been in foster care with ARK's Jack Russell specialist since February 2026. Under her guidance, he has transformed from an energetic scallywag into a mostly well-behaved gentleman. We say "mostly" because Walter is still a young Jack Russell, and a completely reformed Jack Russell would probably be a contradiction in terms!
Walter is completely house-trained and a delightful house dog. He loves human company and wants to be part of family life. When you come home from work, shopping or a day out, he'll greet you with great enthusiasm, bounce around with excitement for ten minutes, and then happily settle down for pats, cuddles and companionship.
He gets along beautifully with other dogs and would happily share his home with a canine companion. Cats, however, are far too interesting for Walter, and he is not suitable for a home with cats.
Likewise, Walter is not suitable for homes with horses, cattle or other livestock. His terrier instincts are simply too strong.
Walter's recall has improved enormously during his time in foster care and he responds well to training. However, applicant should understand that he is still a young Jack Russell. If something particularly exciting catches his attention, his ears can occasionally stop working. Ongoing training and management will be important.
A secure yard is essential. Like many clever Jack Russells, Walter is something of an amateur engineer. He can find a gap where nobody knew one existed, and if there isn't one, he may decide to create one. Good fencing is a must.
One area where Walter excels is his manners around food. He has excellent table manners and is a pleasure to have around the home.

Adoption details
Dogs:
(1) The first step is to complete the online adoption application form at https://southerndownsark.com.au/apply-to-adopt/ Please answer all questions and include photos of your yard and fencing.
(2) All applications will be considered by our Adoption Team, following which a "meet and greet" will be offered to the top-ranking applicant.
(3) If the “meet and greet" is successful, the applicant may adopt the dog and take him or her home the same day.
(4) For successful interstate applicants, different arrangements may apply and will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.
Cats:
