About Gene and Ismene
Gene and Ismene were rescued from a situation where they had minimal human interaction. Although they have made some improvements in their foster home they still remain timid, cautious, and unsure in new environments and around unfamiliar people, and could remain this way throughout their life.
It is important that potential adopters understand that Gene and Ismene are not dogs who will immediately offer cuddles and affection to their new family, nor accompany them to cafés, markets, dog parks/beaches, or social events.
While they continue to gain confidence every day, they are still learning that the world is a safe place and will need time, patience, and gradual exposure to new experiences/places/people at a pace they can comfortably handle.
They are looking for a family who understands that gaining trust takes time and who will enjoy watching them play and explore together, while quietly celebrating the small wins along the way.
Gene & Ismene require the following in the new home:
- A home where they can be adopted together.
- An experienced, patient owner committed to ongoing confidence-building.
- A calm household environment (they do wonderfully with patient and respectful people of all ages).
- Consistent routine, structure, and gentle handling.
- Regular brushing, grooming, and coat maintenance.
- A home where they’ll be indoors and provided with a safe, quiet space.
Gene & Ismene - A special pair looking for a special home.
Gene and Ismene are a beautiful bonded pair of Chinese Cresteds, who rely on each other for comfort and confidence as they navigate the world around them.
Arriving into care heavily matted and coming from a background with limited socialisation, they are both quite fearful of people. While they have made encouraging progress in foster care, both dogs remain sensitive and can still become overwhelmed by unfamiliar people, environments, and new situations. Their new family will need to be prepared to continue the confidence-building work that has already begun.
Gene and Ismene are incredibly sweet, gentle souls. They love to play together, chasing and bouncing around in their own little world, and are becoming more affectionate with their humans each day. They’re now seeking out pats, with Ismene happily offering kisses and curling up on her carer’s lap, while Gene loves to try and initiate playful wrestling and games of tag.
They have taken to crate training like a fish in water, and take great comfort in having a safe space to retreat to when things feel overwhelming. Their crate acts as a security blanket, allowing them to rest, reset, and re-emerge when they feel ready. Providing them with a similar safe space in their new home will be highly beneficial in giving them a sense of safety and familiarity.
They are progressing well with toilet training and respond beautifully to routine, structure, and clear guidance.
Gene and Ismene would thrive in a quiet, understanding home where they can remain together and continue building on the progress they’ve made so far.
They would benefit greatly from regular interactions with calm, confident adult dogs in a controlled environment, whether that be through playdates or another dog in the home, helping show them that the world is a safe and positive place. *Three dogs in the home often requires an excess permit from your council*
These two may be shy and reserved to begin with, but with time, patience, and the right approach, they will reward their new family with a truly special bond.
If you feel you may be able to provide Gene and Ismene with the home they are looking for, and are ready to add two new additions to the family, we would love to hear from you!
