Dear Future Family,

Please don’t judge me by my looks. I know I’m a big boy, and life has left a few marks on me along the way with my frosted face, cautious eyes, and my quiet nature of someone who’s had to learn to survive before he could learn to relax. But underneath it all is a gentle heart that still believes there’s goodness in the world. My name is Derwent, and I think I’m slowly learning that life can have a lot more colour in it than I once knew.

I’m a 6-year-old Ridgeback-Mastiff cross who’s looking for a calm, understanding home where I can finally feel safe. Life has been a little rough around the edges for me, so I can be a timid fellow at first. I’m not the big tough guy type, I like slow introductions, soft voices, and people who understand that trust is something precious. Once I feel safe though, that’s when you’ll see the real me and just how charming I can be.

I’ll sit quietly with you while you have your morning coffee, then happily wander off to snooze on my bed in my crate or stretch out in the sunshine for an afternoon laze. I do like to keep one gentle eye on where my humans are and check in throughout the day.

I’m patient being left at home if you need to go out, especially if I’ve got a treat and comfy spot to nap with the promise of cuddles when you return. Human affection is still my absolute favourite thing in the world … well, aside from food that is.

I know I have a few distinguished grey hairs these days, but don’t be fooled into thinking I’m ready for retirement just yet. I still have plenty of spring in my step and can perform a rather impressive quick-step to the gate when someone mentions walkies. I enjoy strolls where I can stop to sniff all the important local news, and I’m learning more each day about walking like a true gentleman on a lead.

I’m also fully toilet trained, sleep soundly through the night, and ride calmly in the car - I particularly like the front seat where I can take in the full view.

Because the world can still feel overwhelming sometimes, I’d do best in a calm household with a relaxed, neutral dog friend who will respect my space and help me build confidence while I settle in. I’m not comfortable with over excitable young dogs or dominant canine personalities. I could also be happy as your one-and-only dog as long as I have sufficient stimulation and activities throughout the day, with some dog visitors or opportunities for controlled socialisation.

More than anything, I need someone patient and empathetic who understands that trust grows slowly, and that kindness changes everything.

I may not burst into your life with loud confidence straight away. I’m more of a quiet soul who blooms gently over time. But if you choose me, I promise you this: no one will ever love you more loyally than I will.
