Meet Amy
Amy isn't looking for just any home. She's looking for her home, the one where she'll finally unpack her bags and realise she never has to leave again.
Amy is a sweet, sensitive little girl who has had an enormous amount of change in a short life. She came into rescue incredibly thin and, heartbreakingly, gave birth to a stillborn litter shortly after. Since then she's had two adoptions that weren't the right fit.
For a little dog who already found the world overwhelming, that was a lot.
She's now spent over two months in foster care, and when she feels safe, she is blossoming.
Life with Amy
Amy is a quiet homebody. Her favourite spots are the back cushions of the couch and the pillow beside her foster mum's head. Once she trusts you, she likes to be close.
That trust is earned slowly. At first she was very wary of people. Now she's choosing to approach new people and growing more curious and confident, but her new family needs to know they may not meet affectionate-Amy on day one.
She needs patience, consistency, and to be allowed to decide you're safe on her timetable. No forced cuddles.
Out and about
Walks are still new. She's becoming more confident on lead and happily enjoys her walk once she's underway.
Getting out the front door is harder — she can be hesitant at thresholds and sometimes needs to be carried out, or she'll retreat inside. Once the door closes, she accepts the adventure is happening.
She happily uses a doggy door at home. Toilet training is improving but will need gentle, ongoing reinforcement.
Food, space and feeling safe
Amy was extremely underweight and initially struggled to eat. She now enjoys Scratch kibble with home-cooked turkey or beef and veg stew.
Because of her history, she can resource guard food, high-value treats and her resting space when overwhelmed. She communicates with a growl and may escalate if that warning isn't heard. This has become much less frequent as she's settled.
Her growl isn't being "naughty" — it's information. Her family needs to be comfortable listening when she says she needs space, not punishing her for communicating.
Other dogs
Amy loves canine company. Her calm foster brother Zeke has helped her enormously. She would thrive with a friendly, confident male dog around her size.
She's also practising being an only dog and is making progress, so that could work for someone home regularly and willing to patiently build her confidence.
The home Amy needs
Bringing Amy home is the beginning, not the finished product. The first few days may not be magical. She may be unsure, keep her distance, and retreat to a safe spot.
That's okay. Give her days to decompress, weeks to learn your routine, and as long as she needs to decide you are safe.
We've watched it happen — the frightened little dog who took so long to trust now sleeps beside her foster mum's head, ventures outside, walks on lead, seeks people out, and plays with her dog friends.
Amy doesn't need someone to rescue her from where she is now. She needs someone willing to meet her there and quietly walk with her the rest of the way.
If you're looking for instant devotion, Amy probably isn't your dog. But if you find something special about earning the trust of a sensitive little soul, Amy might just be your girl.

If so, please provide details about each animal, including their species, age, breed and personality, and how they generally interact with other animals.

5. Do you have previous experience with
Amy’s breed? If not, have you done thorough research into the breed, including its temperament, exercise needs, grooming, training and potential health requirements?

6. Are you familiar with the long-term responsibilities of dog ownership, including training, socialisation, exercise and ongoing care? Are you willing to give
Amy the time, patience and support she needs to settle into her new home?

7. How many hours will
Amy be left alone on a typical day? Who will be responsible for caring for her during your working hours, absences, holidays or other periods when you are unable to be with her?

8. Are you financially and practically prepared to provide
Amy with quality veterinary care, preventative healthcare, grooming and nutritious food throughout her lifetime?

9. Will Amy be considered a member of your family and primarily live indoors, with appropriate access to a secure backyard/outdoor area? Please describe where Amy will sleep and how she will be accommodated overnight.

10. If your circumstances change in the future and you are no longer able to care for Amy, do you agree to contact PFPRI and seek our assistance before making any arrangements to surrender, rehome her?
