Meet Maizie, a beautiful chocolate Labrador with a big personality, a sharp mind and plenty of lively Labrador spirit.
Maizie came into ARK’s care through no fault of her own following a very reluctant surrender caused by a change in family circumstances. She is now looking for an active, confident home that will appreciate her intelligence, independence and strong connection with her people.
Maizie is friendly, confident and very people-oriented. She loves being part of family life and enjoys companionship, attention and knowing what is going on around her. She is not an overly demonstrative or constantly cuddly dog, but she forms a strong bond with her people and is loyal and responsive to those she trusts.
Maizie appears to have the energy and drive often associated with working-line Labradors. She is not a couch potato and will need regular exercise, mental stimulation and plenty of involvement in daily life. She loves her high-speed zoomies and can be physically enthusiastic, so she would be best suited to a home without young children.
She is highly intelligent, alert and very aware of her surroundings. Maizie will bark to let her family know when someone is approaching, but she is also respectful of clear boundaries and very trainable. In her foster home, she has even learned to sit on a cushion in the kitchen so that she does not become a trip hazard.
Maizie is thoroughly house-trained, sleeps well at night and travels nicely in the car. She enjoys her walks and can be strong on lead at first, but once she understands what is expected, she settles and walks well beside her handler. Her recall is also quite good using the command “here”.
Maizie previously lived happily with an older male Labrador, but she can be selective with other dogs, especially females. She would probably be happiest as the only dog in her new home, where she could enjoy the full attention of her people. She may also be able to live successfully with a calm, socially confident adult male dog following careful introductions.
She should not be rehomed with poultry and is untested with cats. She is curious about horses, cattle, kangaroos and wallabies, but she has not shown a strong prey drive.
Maizie is looking for active, confident owners who understand that clever, energetic dogs need both physical exercise and mental engagement. She will thrive with companionship, clear boundaries, ongoing training and a family who will include her in daily life.
For someone seeking an intelligent, loyal and lively Labrador companion with plenty of personality, Maizie could be the perfect match.

Adoption details
Dogs:
(1) The first step is to complete the online adoption application form at https://southerndownsark.com.au/apply-to-adopt/ Please answer all questions and include photos of your yard and fencing.
(2) All applications will be considered by our Adoption Team, following which a "meet and greet" will be offered to the top-ranking applicant.
(3) If the “meet and greet" is successful, the applicant may adopt the dog and take him or her home the same day.
(4) For successful interstate applicants, different arrangements may apply and will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.
