Can I be your number one?
I’m Von Dutch, and I recently arrived from a rural pound into the big city. After a very nervous start including a lot of hiding, my love for food, walks, ear scratches and my foster sister has allowed me to show how smart and trainable I am.
I’m still young and I have already learned “no”, “down”, “come” and “crate”, and I’ve learned not to hump my foster sister! My toilet training is complex. I know to go outside and can use a dog door - however I sometimes choose to go in inappropriate places, which appears to be a dominance thing. I might also try to show new dogs how dominant I am at a mighty 3.5kgs!
With gentle exposure my separation anxiety is already improving - this however remains an ongoing process. I need my humans to prioritise ongoing exposure and desensitisation following my adoption, as I’m prone to escaping and freaking out when scared.
I will also need a home committed to positive, rewards-based training and providing me social and mental enrichment, and to including me in their lives. I am already a cult classic at my local pub! When I am at home, I like cuddling with my foster sister, and I enjoy being a lap dog (but only on my terms.)
I am going to be an adaptable dog who could thrive in lots of different homes:
I would do very well living with another young, playful dog who could keep me company, show me how to play, and help me become more brave.
I could also thrive as an only dog with a family who is home a lot, and who is committed to daily social outings. I can’t be left alone all day before a quick walk around the block - exercise and socialisation with dogs and humans is key to helping my anxiety.
As I am an escape artist, I need a secure backyard where I can leave my scent all over.
In foster care I have lived in an apartment where I spend mornings lying in the sun, which just makes me love my park walks even more. (A note for people in apartments though - currently I am still barking for a few minutes when left alone.)
I spent my first 48 hours in foster care living with a cat, with whom I was friendly and keen to play, and I might like living with a dog-savvy cat after careful introductions.
My new family needs to commit to daily maintenance. I need a daily brush (which I love) and a regular bath (which I hate), and I need my eyes cleaned every morning.
Currently I am eating a mixture of roast chicken and Lifewise dry food, and love stealing my sister’s crocodile food and sweet potato when I can. I have no known medical issues.
I’m cute, I’m social, I’m smart, and sometimes I dance when I’m excited. I might just be the total package. It’s alright to just admit that I’m your fantasy. I’m your number one!
