About Huey
Huey is a big, handsome boy with a friendly nature and plenty of love to give. At 45kg, he’s a solid dog and will need a confident handler who is comfortable managing a large companion.
He’s an affectionate, people-loving dog who enjoys being part of the family. Huey is just as happy heading out for an adventure as he is curling up on the couch for a cuddle at the end of the day.
He has lived with small children previously and has a generally gentle, social temperament with people. He doesn't know his own size though, so a home with dog-savvy kids over 5 might be most suitable.
Huey is very food motivated and knows his basic commands like “sit” and “drop,” and is eager to please, but he will benefit from ongoing training, particularly around lead manners as he is strong and can pull when excited. With consistency and structure, he has all the foundations to become a very well-mannered dog.
Huey would enjoy having another medium to large dog companion. He is not suitable for homes with cats.
In his previous home, Huey was used to being left alone at times while the family was at work. However, in foster care he has shown that he can become quite attached to his person and may feel unsettled when separated, often whining or waiting by windows to be let back inside. This is something that will benefit from gentle, consistent management as he settles into a new routine.
Huey is crate trained for overnight and settles well. He loves to eat a raw carrot at bedtime as part of his routine.
As a German Shorthaired Pointer, Huey will need an active home that can provide regular exercise, mental stimulation and engagement. Ideally, his new home will have experience with large or working breeds and understand the needs of an intelligent, energetic dog.
Huey is a lovely, affectionate boy who will thrive with the right guidance and lifestyle, a loyal companion ready to be part of an active and loving home.
Huey is desexed, C7 vaccinated, up to date with flea and worm treatment and has received annual heartworm vaccinations.
Medical notes
Huey can be prone to “happy tail,” where his enthusiastic wagging leads to the tip of his tail knocking against hard surfaces and becoming sore or injured. It’s not something that bothers him in the moment, but it can lead to ongoing irritation if not managed. His new home will need to be mindful of this by keeping his environment as tail-friendly as possible (soft furnishings, minimising tight spaces where he can whip his tail against hard edges) and monitoring for any signs of injury. With a bit of awareness and simple management, it’s very manageable and just part of having a big, happy dog like Huey.
Huey would also benefit from a dental clean and scale to bring his oral health up to the same great standard as the rest of him. This is quite common and straightforward, and addressing it now will help prevent future issues and keep him comfortable long term. Ongoing dental care, such as appropriate chews or brushing, will help maintain his teeth and gums once this initial clean has been completed.
