About Leo
Leo is a 6-month-old Dobermann who has already tipped the scales at 30+ kilos and is very much still growing into those long legs and oversized paws. He's the definition of a "gentle giant in training" - a silly, affectionate, occasionally clumsy youngster who doesn't quite realise just how big he is yet.
Leo recently spent time in foster care, and it gave us a great window into his personality outside of the shelter environment. Once he settled, his goofy, playful side really came through. He's social, people-oriented, and thrives when he's included in everyday life rather than left on the sidelines. Like many adolescent Dobermanns, he's still learning about his own strength and coordination, so he'll need a home that's ready for a bit of chaos, a lot of laughs, and some ongoing training.
He could live with a well-matched dog who can cope with his size, enthusiasm, and puppy energy. A calm, confident canine companion would help him continue building his social skills and manners. He may also suit a home with secondary school-aged children who are comfortable around large, bouncy young dogs - Leo is affectionate, but he's still very much a big puppy who forgets his size when excited.
Dobermanns are intelligent, loyal, and deeply people-focused dogs. They're often described as "velcro dogs" because they bond strongly and like to stay close to their humans. With that comes some important needs:
Mental stimulation is non-negotiable - Dobermanns are clever and can become bored quickly without training, enrichment, and structured activity.
Consistency and boundaries - They thrive when expectations are clear and steady, especially through adolescence (which Leo is firmly in right now).
Physical exercise - Not just a walk around the block; they do best with structured walks, play, and opportunities to use their brains.
Ongoing training & socialisation - Adolescence can be the trickiest stage for this breed. Leo will need someone committed to guiding him through it with patience and positive reinforcement.
Companionship - They don't do well being left out of family life for long periods; they want to be part of everything.
Leo is looking for a home that understands large working breeds and is ready to invest in his future. He will reward that effort with loyalty, humour, and a whole lot of heart. He's not a finished product - he's a work in progress with enormous potential.
If you're after a couch potato, Leo is not your guy.
If you're after a bright, goofy, loving young dog to grow with you - he might just be exactly that.
Leo is ready to find a home that will guide him through adolescence and let him grow into the incredible Dobermann he's meant to be.
