About Polar
š¾ Polar is a super handsome,2-year-old gentle young Maremma with a big heart and a thoughtful nature. He's a loveable boy who is looking for a patient, understanding home with someone who has experience with guardian breeds, particularly Maremmas.
Polar came into care after being found on the on-ramp of a highway. Sadly, we don't know much about where he spent the first part of his life, but it's clear that he's still learning that the world - and people - can be safe.
Since entering care, Polar has shown that he can be worried by new people and unfamiliar environments. He softens beautifully when interactions are taken at his pace and does best with calm, predictable surroundings. Sudden changes can make him uncomfortable, so slow introductions and consistency are key for him to thrive.
šPersonality & Behaviour: Polar displays many typical Maremma traits. He is an independent soul and can appear a little aloof at times, but once he begins to trust, he truly enjoys the company of his people. He loves being outdoors and has a quiet appreciation for spending time near those he's bonded with.
Although he can still be nervous of his surroundings, Polar can make progress with gentle exposure. Walks around the neighbourhood should be introduced slowly and thoughtfully. He came into care with a small collar wound and can be unsure of pressure around his neck, so a harness is strongly recommended for walking, especially if there's any pulling.
Close handling and restraint can worry Polar, so he will need forceāfree, positive reinforcement training and caregivers who respect his boundaries. He does best when he has a bonded person with him whom he trusts.
š Polar knows how to sit and may do very well with continued training once he feels safe and settled. He hasn't shown interest in toys while in care, but he absolutely has a playful side! Polar enjoys play-bowing with people he's comfortable with - this is his way of inviting you to play.
Providing both mental and physical enrichment will be important for him, especially if living in a suburban setting.
š¾Polar has been calm and respectful around other dogs in the shelter. He will have a quick sniff and then disengage. A Meet-and-greet required with any resident dogs.
š” Ideal Home - Polar is looking for a home that: Has breed experience with Maremmas or similar guardian breeds.
Is patient, calm, and willing to let him decompress at his own pace; Understands guardian breed tendencies, including potential protective behaviours; Can provide structure, gentle training, and enrichment
Maremmas are natural protectors and may bark when alerting to changes in their environment. While Polar has not displayed excessive barking in the shelter, adopters should be prepared for this to develop as he becomes more settled and confident at home.
šSweet Polar is a sensitive, intelligent young dog who needs time, understanding, and kindness. With the right home and a patient adopter, Polar has the potential to blossom into a deeply loyal and rewarding companion.
If you believe you could be the calm, steady presence Polar is searching for, he would love to meet you. š¤
