Cabbage is a gentle, happy, confident little girl. She trots around with her tail held high, playing with whatever she can find, toys, shoes, tissues, cushions, our ancient Maltese/Shih Tzu who is her mentor, but also whatever she can reach from off the coffee table, the tv remote, a tube of hand cream, pens, so beware. She would love the cats to join in her games and can’t understand why they won’t, barking encouragement for them to come down from the kitchen table and join in the fun.

Cabbage loves other dogs as long as they are gentle, and looks to her mentor for guidance, reassurance and play. She wasn’t handled much at all when she was born, so when she came to us as her foster carers, she was very wary of humans. She still refuses to be stroked or picked up unless cornered. She will now tolerate being nursed and stroked for a short time. She is the first to greet you with a wagging tail when you wake up in the morning and the first at the door when you come home. She will lick your feet and hands and play tug of war with you.

Cabbage is mostly toilet trained and we are sure she will easily learn to use a doggy door. She only ‘goes inside’ if we do not anticipate her needs. She knows her name and often comes when she is called. She knows our routines and sleeps through the night in her bed, which is near her mentor. Cabbage has a stunning coat that is easy to keep looking gorgeous with regular grooming. She does not like going places in the car, salivating with fear.

She loves her walks and is good on the lead as long as her mentor is trotting alongside, and enjoys meeting other dogs. She is nervous in new surroundings, doesn’t like loud traffic noises in the street (who does) but is generally unconcerned once she is familiar with the route. She investigates the smells with interest. Meeting other dogs in the park is her idea of happiness.

Cabbage absolutely needs a confident, playful resident dog or two in her new home. Dogs are her people, they’re all she’s known. They help her to explore new things and will be the key to her fully trusting humans. She suffers miserable separation anxiety if her mentor leaves the house without her, despite being left with a human and the cats for company.

Cabbage’s perfect family will be understanding, patient, and ideally have had previous experience with puppy farm or timid dogs. She is not going to be a dog you can pat or cuddle straight away. You will spend time coexisting until she’s ready for touch. With love and time, this special girl will reward you with her trust and the joy of watching her blossom.
