URGENT: Help Needed for Townsville’s Cat Crisis

Townsville is currently facing a cat crisis. It is estimated that 30 cats are euthanized every day due to a lack of space in our shelters—over 10,000 cats annually. The local animal shelter is at capacity, and many rescue groups are reluctant to take in cats older than six months due to difficulties rehoming adult cats.

By adopting, you are directly helping reduce this crisis.

We’re happy to help arrange interstate transport if needed—the adopter would just need to cover the transport costs.

Adoption Fee & Desexing Requirement

Adoption Fee: $500

To support the long-term health and wellbeing of our kittens, SANA requires adopters to arrange and pre-pay for their kitten’s desexing procedure with a registered veterinary clinic before adoption is finalised. The adoption fee will be discounted when provided proof of procedure payment invoice.

Adopters must:
• Book a desexing appointment with a veterinarian for when the kitten reaches the appropriate age (generally 6–8 months)
• Provide a copy of the veterinary invoice confirming the procedure has been prepaid to SANA prior to finalise adoption

We have implemented this change with the long-term health and wellbeing of the kitten in mind, while also allowing adopters to take their kitten home from six weeks of age so they don’t miss out on the adorable kitten stage and most importantly the early bonding period.

According to guidance from the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA), desexing very young kittens may carry certain risks in some animals. These can include:

• Orthopaedic or developmental concerns due to delayed growth plate closure
• Altered metabolism which may increase the risk of obesity
• Changes in insulin sensitivity, potentially increasing the risk of diabetes
• Possible urinary tract complications, particularly in male cats
• Potential impacts on behavioural, reproductive and hormonal development

For these reasons, desexing is recommended from 6 months of age, unless otherwise advised by your veterinarian.

Failure to comply with the desexing requirement may result in the adoption agreement being considered void, and SANA reserves the right to take appropriate action to ensure the welfare of the animal.

Adoption fees help cover the costs of rescue, veterinary care, food, parasite prevention and rehabilitation for animals in care.
