About Priscilla
At just 8 months old, Poppy has already had a tough start to life. It's likely she was born and raised on the streets, learning to survive in a world that felt unpredictable and unsafe. Because of that, she's finding the shelter environment overwhelming. The noise, the unfamiliar smells, the constant activity, it's all a lot for a young cat who has never known true security.
But underneath that fear is a naturally sweet girl.
Poppy isn't defensive or unfriendly. She is unsure. When approached gently, she softens. When spoken to quietly, she listens. She wants to trust, she just doesn't yet know how.
Cats like Poppy don't build confidence overnight. Trust is something they learn slowly, through consistency and kindness. The most important thing an adopter can offer her is patience.
- Give her space at first. Allow her to observe her new home without pressure to interact.
- Create a quiet "safe zone." A small room with a bed, hiding spot, food, and litter helps her settle without feeling overwhelmed.
- Let her make the first move. Sit nearby, read a book, talk softly-show her that your presence is calm and predictable.
- Use food as reassurance. Gentle treats or scheduled meals help build positive associations with people.
- Celebrate small wins. A slow blink, sitting closer, or exploring while you're in the room are huge milestones.
Trust with a cat like Poppy isn't instant ... but when it comes, it's incredibly special. These cats often form the deepest, most loyal bonds because they remember the person who gave them a chance to feel safe.
Poppy is part of our Rescue or Rehome program, where we are committed to finding homes for cats and kittens who simply cannot cope in the shelter environment. If you can open your heart and home to Poppy - or if you're a rescue group able to help - please reach out to us at adoptions@dogshome.com
