Xena is a very loving, energetic and boisterous working line German Shepherd. She is trained in instant recall, sit, wait, down and bed. She's a very loving, affectionate dog who loves to be with you, following you around the house and yard, relaxing beside you when you are sitting down. Xena is house trained. She will let you know when she needs to go out, by standing at the door. She is also dog door trained and has access to and from the house/ yard day and night. She can be trusted to be left at home with access to the house for long hours while her foster carer works, although we don't recommend long hours as she is an intelligent dog who may get bored. Xena doesn’t dig unless you give her a bone, usually choosing the garden bed to bury her treasure. She is not a barker, only barking if someone is around and stopping when they have moved on.
Xena loves to go for walks and will get excited when she sees the lead: she will nudge you to put it on to get going. She is quite headstrong and determined to walk out in front of her handler, despite efforts to train her to walk to heel. She is also highly social and pulls towards other people and dogs on her walks, so her new owner will need to be capable of handling a strong dog who wants to greet everyone! She would potentially benefit from a few training sessions with a trainer for strategies and tips on managing her on lead.
Xena was raised with a cat and is currently living with a cat in her foster home, however she will attempt to chase cats she may see out and about. We are looking for a home without small children as she is too bouncy for them and may accidentally knock them over in her excitement. Xena is very energetic and therefore will need a large yard or acreage so she can stretch her legs.
We are seeking an experienced German Shepherd home because Xena will not suit everyone. She is a great dog but will need someone who understands the breed and will continue to put her existing training to use and also hopefully work with her when on-lead.
