NAME: Delilah

BEFORE SAFE ESPERANCE: Came to SAFE as an owner surrender with her brother Elvis

BREED: Jack Russell x

BREED TRAITS: Jack Russells are lively, independent and clever. They are trainable but have a mind of their own and if bored can dig and chew. Terriers are devoted to their people, affectionate and love being with them so cannot be left for long periods. Careful and sensitive socialisation from a young age is a must as they are small dogs with big personalities.

ASSETS: Easy-going, affectionate, friendly, playful and very sweet. She loves everyone she meets!

FAVOURITE THINGS: Delilah loves to play wrestle with Elvis and enjoys playing tug with her toys, chasing a ball and hiding under things. She is a typical puppy with bursts of energy where she plays for a while then settles down for a snooze before waking up and doing it all over again!  
 
ENDEARING FEATURES: She’s a bright girl and has the most beautifully coloured fur.

OTHER ANIMALS: Being a young puppy, she will get on well with other friendly dogs after gentle, supervised introductions. She could live with a dog-savvy, confident cat, again after gentle introduction.

GENERAL INFO: Delilah will need training for pretty much everything being so young. Housetraining is underway but she still has some way to go to master it. Expect accidents while she’s settling into her new home and routine!  She’ll benefit greatly from puppy school and ongoing classes into adulthood where she can learn and socialise with other dogs; this is a commitment we will expect from her new owner.
 
ESSENTIALS for Delilah: 

** a loving home where someone is there for most of the day, essential in the first six months after adoption 
    
** a home where she is treated as part of the family and is allowed to be inside or out as she needs and to sleep inside at night  

** a decent sized, well fenced garden where she can run, play, sniff and explore in safety

** attendance at puppy school and continued training into adulthood for her to learn and grow confidence – essential. Please give your puppy direction and fair boundaries to engender balance in her growth 

** continued positive, gentle exposure and socialisation

Delilah will have bursts of energy while a pup and we envisage will be medium to high energy at times as an adult dog but as we don’t know her breed mix this is hard to quantify – she will let you know how much exercise/interaction she needs as she grows. She could live with another young dog with similar energy to her or have regular interactions with other friendly dogs.

Delilah could live with dog-savvy caring children over 12 years of age, who will interact with her gently but also know when to give her space.  We encourage new owners, especially with children, to work with a crate to allow the pup space and 'down' time. These puppies have not been raised with children, so owners need to be very aware of boundaries both for children and pups - being small dogs please remember that they are not toys and will require respectful handling and gentle interactions.

Due to her young age, Delilah will be available to adopt from the week of 16 February.
